Pop-Up Window Cards

Hello! A few weeks ago, I shared a video showing how to create shadow box cards. People seemed to like it, so I am back with a variation of that design… featuring pop-up windows.

All of today’s cards have a window on the front… and a pop-up feature inside. This can be done with many dies and stamps you may have – you simply have to change up the size of the pop-up mechanism. In the video I show many different options in hopes that you can find one that works for the products you want to use. Be sure to watch it as it is best understood by seeing it in action! (By the way, if you didn’t see my Inside Shadow Box Card Video, check it out HERE.)

My first example shows a large stamped image that pops up upon opening. On the front, I stamped the must-have My Favorite Things Itsy Bitsy Polka Dot Stamp on kraft cardstock with Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink. I adhered the piece to a white notecard and die cut a window with a Simon Says Stamp Stitched Square Die. I also stamped a sentiment from the Clearly Besotted Sweet Berries Stamp Set. (This set is SO sweet.)

When you open the card, a fun Clearly Besotted Sweet Berries image pops up! I love that you can see the image when the card is closed, but are surprised by the pop up when you open it. This works best with large stamped images or die cuts… or several adhered together.

Another design option is to have a large panel pop-up when you open it. On the outside of this card, I have a few small Hero Arts Nesting Cloud die cuts and a “sending you…” greeting from the Waffle Flower Rainbows Stamp Set.

And when you open the card, a Simon Says Stamp Stitched Rectangle panel pops up with a Clearly Besotted Over the Rainbow Stamp Set rainbow. (Isn’t it cute!?) I added more Hero Arts Nesting Cloud die cuts and stenciled clouds using the Simon Says Stamp Clouds For Days Stencil.

My third example shows a large area that pops up when opened. This is especially fun when the outside is quite simple. Here, I have a Simon Says Stamp Stitched Circle Die Cut window with a Clearly Besotted A Little Sentimental sentiment.

And the best part is when you open it… there is a party inside!

The little animal images are from the Clearly Besotted Wild Times Stamp Set and the balloons are from an older Clearly Besotted stamp set. (Check out the Clearly Besotted Let’s Party Again Stamp Set for something similar.) This sentiment is also from the Clearly Besotted A Little Sentimental sentiment and I added bits of Tonic Golden Years Confetti.

You can also keep the inside simple if that is preferred. Here I used the Jane’s Doodles Angels and All Occasions Stamp Sets.

For the inside, I added a Hero Arts Nesting Cloud Die Cut and Simon Says Stamp Clouds For Days Stenciling.

Here is another card showing how to pop up a large area inside a card… but with multiple Simon Says Stamp Stitched Circle Die Cut windows on the front. I am crazy about the Clearly Besotted Cute Koala Stamp Set!

On the large pop up area, I made a scene using the Clearly Besotted Cute Koala Stamp Set and the Honey Bee Branch and Leaves Dies. Such cuteness!

I added Sakura Black Glaze Pen to the eyes and nose to make them stand out.

You can also top-folding cards with the window pop-up feature. This design is my favorite! The front of this card features a Simon Says Stamp Stitched Square Die Cut window and a sentiment from the Clearly Besotted Tiny Tortoise Stamp Set.

Inside there is a party scene with Clearly Besotted Tiny Tortoise images and fun balloons. I can’t wait to make a few more like this!

I hope you will try these designs out!

  1. Fabulously fun cards. Thank you for taking a chunk out of your time to explain these cards, defiantly a great mix on a plain opening card. Clearly Besotted images are mega cute & the way you coloured them is great.

  2. Thank you! These are my most favorite pop-up cards I have ever seen. I love the technique for creating them and your video was most clear and easy to follow. I love the strawberry and the koala bear design cards the best, but they are all adorable.

  3. Your cards are absolutely wonderful Jennifer! So creative, I just loved seeing you pull these together! You are a genius, Lisa xx

  4. This is great. I have s small suggestion: In the video, you suggest screen shots of the dimensions of various pop-up pieces. I often post a Pinterest pin for a technique from your blog post page, rather than the video, because sometimes the post itself reminds me of the technique without needing to watch the entire video again. In this case, having the dimensions in the post or at the end would be really handy. Just an idea. Your card making tutorials are my favorites!
