Masking Stencils + GIVEAWAY
Hello! Today I am sharing ways to combine masking with stencils. These techniques are great for one-layer cards.

For my first card, I created a mask from Avery Removable Adhesive Sheets and die cut an Altenew Halftone Heart (SSS | ALT) opening. I placed the mask on white cardstock and used Tim Holtz Distress Blending Brushes and Altenew Ink (SSS | ALT) to create a soft rainbow look. I then added the new Altenew Elegant Swirls Stencil (SSS | ALT) on top and applied more of the same colors… but this time more generously using Mini Ink Blending Tools. Finally, I misted Tsukineko Shimmer Spritz over the stencil for a bit of shimmer. After removing the mask, I am left with beautiful color…
I added stacked “love” die cuts using the Altenew Script Words Dies (SSS | ALT) and a stamped sentiment from the Altenew Halftone Hearts Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).
I also used the same Altenew Elegant Swirls Stencil (SSS | ALT) to decorate my matching envelope.
My next example steps things up a bit. I created a positive and negative mask from Avery Removable Adhesive Sheets and an Altenew Golden Feather Die (SSS | ALT). I placed the feather on white cardstock and inked over a Altenew Spring Garden Stencil (SSS | ALT) with soft ink and a Tim Holtz Distress Blending Brushes. I then put on the negative space mask instead and applied several light colors before lining up the stencil and inking heavily.
I really like how the pattern lines up along the whole piece. I added a sentiment from the Altenew Birds of a Feather Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).
I really like the new Altenew Molded Lines Stencil (SSS | ALT)! I used this stencil along with Altenew Halftone Stars (SSS | ALT) die cut masks to create a continuous background. I kept the inside of the star darker in color and added a coat of Altenew Translucent Pearl Embossing Powder (SSS | ALT).
I created the sentiment with Altenew Simple Alphabet Dies (SSS | ALT) and the Altenew Halftone Stars Stamp Set (SSS | ALT). For a bit of shine, I adhered a few Tonic Golden Years Confetti stars.
Another fun stenciling technique you can do with masks involves white pigment ink. I started by inking a light amount of light green ink and then white pigment ink over the oh-so-great Altenew Feeling Dotty Stencil (SSS | ALT). After heat setting it, I added a mask created from Avery Removable Adhesive Sheets with a die cut Altenew Leaf Canopy (SSS | ALT) opening. I applied lots of green ink on top… and the white pigment ink slightly resists the ink, leaving soft dots.
The sentiment is from the Altenew Leaf Canopy Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).
This next card doesn’t use masking paper, but rather masking tape. I used Therm O Web Purple Tape to mask off areas of the Altenew Aztec Motif Stencil (SSS | ALT) to apply different colors. I also added colorful gems to the pattern.
The sentiment features the Altenew Simple Alphabet Dies (SSS | ALT).
My last card was a collaboration with my 6-year-old daughter, Lila. I masked the edges of white cardstock with Therm O Web Purple Tape and then traced the Altenew Flowing Drops Stencil (SSS | ALT) with a black pen. Lila then did some really cool artsy coloring with Copic Markers.
Didn’t Lila do a great job!? So inspiring. We added Altenew Caps Bold Alphabet Dies (SSS | ALT) die cut letters with a thick coat of Tonic Crystal Glaze.
