Masking Tips + GIVEAWAY

Hi there. Today is all about masking! Masking can be a tedious process, but the results are always impressive. My video shares several tips that I hope are helpful in making it easier!

One of the best ways to save time when masking is to use the coordinating dies to cut the masks, instead of scissors. When you finish your stamping, you can then use a matching pen to fill in any lines that didn’t stamp due to the white trim around images from the coordinating dies. It saves so much time to not have to hand cut the images!

In the video I also share another helpful tip when doing masking. I arrange the masks onto an extra card so I can plan where the images will end up. I then can use that as a guide for where to place the images and transfer the masks.

Be sure to watch the video to see the tips in action!

My first card uses lots of masking. Using the coordinating dies to cut the masks saved me a TON of time. I used the Pretty Pink Posh Flourishing Fuchsias Stamp Set (SSS | PPP | EH) and Dies (SSS | PPP | EH) – such pretty images. I stamped the same images on the top and bottom of my card to save more time. This is easy with the MISTI Stamping Tool (SSS | EH).

I added a lovely sentiment from the Pretty Pink Posh Life Stamp Set (SSS | PPP | EH) along with several of the shiny Pretty Pink Posh Metallic Rose Gold Jewels (SSS | PPP | EH). I also stamped a greeting from the Pretty Pink Posh Happy Mail Stamp Set (SSS | PPP | EH) on the matching envelope.

My next example also uses the same masking tricks (again – be sure to watch the video!) with the Pretty Pink Posh Playful Puppies Stamp Set (SSS | PPP | EH) and Pretty Pink Posh Happy Mail Stamp Set (SSS | PPP | EH) and coordinating dies. These images are just too cute!

I colored my images with Copic Markers, but you could use any medium you want. Also, I like to use a Copic Multiliner 0.1 Black Pen to draw in any parts of the images covered by the coordinating die masks.

My last two examples feature the Pretty Pink Posh Butterfly Friends Stamp Set (SSS | PPP | EH) and Dies (SSS | PPP | EH). I used a bit of masking with these, also, and created two cards at once. The first uses the Pretty Pink Posh Lovely Script Die (SSS | PPP | EH).

I also used my Sakura Black Glaze Pen to add shiny black details to the butterflies and “lovely” stacked die cut.

My second card showcases the Pretty Pink Posh Get Well Soon Die (SSS | PPP | EH).

  1. I do masking, but like your way best. Mine is too slow. Love the video, and ordered stamps sets, but dies were out of stock.

  2. I love these cards and btw, you color very well. I do mask, but it has been a while. This video inspired me to do it again. I also was not aware of the Glaze Pen. Very easy. Does it take a while to dry or is it similar to a GEL pen?

  3. I think masking is a great idea but…..
it always looks so darn complicated, maybe I
will challenge myself to give it a go.
I totally love the puppy card!!

  4. Masking has become one of my favorite techniques. I love being able to give my cards depth. They really look lovely. Thank you for sharing you times and video. Love what you do.

  5. Your cards are amazing Jennifer. I think you copic coloring is perfect and love the colors you picked for your cards. I love the butterfly card! Thanks for sharing with us.

  6. Masking is new to me, but I hope to try it out soon! Your idea I have tried is stamping card with images that match on top and bottom with my super MISTI!

  7. I don’t use the masking technique very often but
do think it makes a much more dimensional card
when I do. Love your examples.
    thanks for sharing

  8. Masking is very detailed, but fun,I needed a masking paper that was more reasonable,so thanks for Avery.

  9. I don’t do a lot of masking, but I want to try this trick you just showed us. Very cool and I never would have thought of it 🙂 I always thought how could you use the dies to do the masking since there is the white space around the stamp space, but this makes so much sense and so much easier! Thanks for sharing and I’ll be trying this very soon! Thanks for sharing!

  10. Love the fuchsia stamp set. It’s so pretty and I am not really a floral kind of person. I like the finished cards, but have to say that there is not enough time left in my life to take this amount of time for a card. Glad you did though. I do mask but normally much more simply, maybe one image.

  11. I normally steer away from masking because of the fussy cuts, however, you have shown us a much easier way, thank you SO much!

  12. I’ve started cutting a mask for any stamps that I may want to overlap. It really saves time when I need a mask. I don’t do it real often, but I love it when they turn out.

Your fuchsia card is gorgeous. I love flowers and the colors you used are so beautiful.

  13. These are such gorgeous cards. I appreciate your ideas for help making cards faster (I’m always in awe of how many cards you show on your videos), and I love the symmetric layouts. Thanks for sharing such fun scenes with us!

  14. Beautiful cards Jennifer. I have done masking a couple times but that’s about it. I bought masking fluid as well but haven’t used it yet. Thank you for sharing your talent

  15. Thank you so much for your video. I haven’t tried the masking but now that I see how easy it is thanks to you. I will be doing it this for sure. Your cards ate b eautiful.

  16. Great tips that I am definitely gonna use next time! I have done masking only a few times because I am too lazy to cut masks as I don’t own dies all that much!!

  17. I love the idea of using the masks to plan, and then perfectly position your stamps for the finished card. Your cards are beautiful, especially the first one with the fabulous colours of the flowers.

  18. Wow – this is some next level masking. I have tried simple masking (1-2 images) by fussy cutting. And I love the black glaze pen for adding eyes to critter stamps. Using the coordinating dies saves so much time and the results are very impressive. The butterfly cards in particular are stunning!

  19. Hello. I have done masking, but it was simple ones. I can see using my Misti will really help a lot. I love the new Pretty Pink Posh FLOURISHING FUCHSIAS and the Butterfly sets. Using coordinating dies are a great idea for masking.

  20. I have done simple masking with post-it notes. But I love the puppies card you made. That stamp set is adorable. Thanks for the chance to win.

  21. Thanks for this video … really wanted to know what scissors you use to cut dies. Haven’t done any masking yet but will do so once my stamping tool arrives.

  22. I always don’t buy the coordinating die for 2 reasons…I can just fussy cut the image, and so I can spend the money on buying other supplies. But now, I am totally convinced that I need the coordinating die. As always, great technique and great results, Jennifer!

  23. These are such gorgeous cards, Jennifer! I do masking on my own cards every now and again, but I have to say – it’s not a technique that I use very often. You inspired me to use it some time soon, though! Thanks so much for sharing your talent & ideas with us!

  24. Wonderful cards! That fuchsia card is beyond gorgeous. One of my favorite flowers. I have done masking but this is a much better way to do it. Thanks for all the tips.

  25. I have not used masking yet, but am planning to give it a try when I get a chance. (Not looking forward to the fussy cutting though. 🙂 ) Beautiful work as always!

  26. Beautiful cards! I love all three and want to start using the masking technique. Your videos always inspire me to try new things. Thank you!

  27. I love the butterflies but then I am a butterfly fiend. Thanks so much for the masking video. You are the best!

  28. I do a tiny bit of masking. I am intimidated by the technique. I HATE to fussy cut!! Your cards made the process so much easier!! I wonder if I could cut the masking pages in my Brother Scan N Cut Machine. I’m gonna give it a try. A whole new world would open up for me if I could cut masks that way

  29. Really liked the masking tips and perfect positioning – have done a little masking with sun, sky and snowbanks – but after watching this think I will try more . Not a big fan of fussy cutting.
