5 Resist Techniques + GIVEAWAY

Hi! I will never forget the first time I did the resist technique mannnnnnnnnny years ago. It was like magic! Since then, I have discovered many more types of resist  and have shared them in videos. However, today I am pulling my five favorites together to share with you.

Here are five of my favorite resist techniques:

TRADITIONAL RESIST

“Traditional resist” is the most magical… creating smooth, soft images surrounded by color. For this technique, you need glossy cardstock or a coated cardstock, such as Ranger Specialty Stamping Paper… along with Versamark and dye ink.

Using Versamark Ink, I stamped several images from the Hero Arts My Monthly Hero May Kit onto Ranger Specialty Stamping Paper. After heat setting it completely, I applied a generous amount of blue dye ink on top and wiped away the excess. The Versamark resists the ink and leaves soft images. Such a pretty look!

I added a Hero Arts My Monthly Hero May Kit die cut frame along with a few extra leaves and pearls.

BLACK INK RESIST

Another form of resist is “trapped” resist. This involves clear heat embossing over paper to trap color underneath… before applying a black ink on top.

I started by applying a rainbow of Distress Ink to white cardstock. I then clear heat embossed images from the Hero Arts My Monthly Hero May Kit on top. Finally, I applied black ink over the images – covering it completely – before wiping away the excess. The embossing powder resists the black ink and allows the colors to show through. You can apply any color over the embossing but black is makes a big impact.

I added a simple die cut frame around the inking using a Hero Arts Nesting Rounded Rectangle Die.

EMBOSSED RESIST

Any heat embossed image will resist many types of markers, inks, and paints applied over them. I always find embossed resist techniques with white powder the most impressive.

For this card, I white heat embossed images from the Hero Arts My Monthly Hero May Kit on white cardstock. I then pressed a Hero Arts Ombre Reactive Spring Day Ink Pad directly onto the images… covering it completely with ink. After wiping away the excess ink, I added drips of water. (This ink reacts with water and gives pretty results.) The white embossing stays bright white.

I again added a Hero Arts My Monthly Hero May Kit die cut frame and a few more added leaves. Although it is detailed, it comes together quickly.

Here is another example using embossed resist with white embossing powder. This time I applied a light bit of dye ink on top with Tim Holtz Distress Blending Brushes.

I really like the look of the soft inking using the brushes.

WHITE INK RESIST

For a soft resist look, I like to use white pigment ink for the images.

After stamping images from the Hero Arts My Monthly Hero May Kit with Hero Arts Unicorn White Pigment Ink on white cardstock, I heat set it completely. I then applied Distress Ink (you can use other dye inks, too) generously over the stamping. The white ink somewhat resists the ink on top, giving soft results. I love this for backgrounds!

I used the Hero Arts Circle Infinity Dies to die cut the circles and added a sentiment from the new Hero Arts Swing By Soon Stamp Set. The bird is from the Hero Arts Bird and Banner Die Set.

VERSAMARK RESIST

For the softest resist look, I like to use Versamark Ink. For my card, I created my own feather stamp from white craft foam using the Hero Arts Feather Die. I stamped it with Versamark Ink on white cardstock and heat set it completely. The image will disappear! I then applied a heavy amount of Distress Ink over it. The Veramark resists the ink a bit… leaving a ghost-like image.

For the background of this card, I used the gorgeous new Hero Arts Papel Picado Confetti Die and added pearls. I created the sentiment using the Hero Arts Hello Die and a stamp from the Hero Arts My Monthly Hero May Kit.
