Kraft Cardstock Techniques + Sale

Hello! Today I am sharing LOTS of techniques using kraft cardstock. I love the different looks you can get on this paper, and hope you like them, too. I also have a fun giveaway and sale info!

I really like how kraft cardstock changes the look of stamping, coloring, and more. I like a few different kraft cardstocks — Neenah Desert Storm Light Kraft (lightest), Gina K Kraft (medium), My Favorite Things Kraft (medium), and Hero Arts Kraft Paper (dark). I use all of these options in my video.

Today I share a few ways to use kraft cardstock creatively. Keep in mind that many of these techniques work with other colors of cardstock.

#1: OFF-SET STAMPING

One of the coolest effects you can get with kraft cardstock is with off-set stamping. I first stamp an image in white pigment ink and then slightly offset the stamp and stamp again with a colorful dye ink.

For my first example, I stamped on Hero Arts Kraft Paper and used Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA) – my favorite white pigment ink – and new colors of Gina K Dye Ink. These will be released in a few days. The images are all from the Concord & 9th Wreath Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) which is a brilliant set! Be sure to watch the video to see how it is used.

For my next card, I used the same off-set stamping technique but with Gina K Kraft Cardstock and a different wreath from the Concord & 9th Wreath Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9).

I used Hero Arts White Satin Pearl Embossing Powder (SSS | HA) on the sentiment – I love the look of this powder on kraft cardstock. I stamped a message from the Concord & 9th Best Mail Ever Stamp Set on a Studio Katia 5×5 Neenah Desert Storm Envelope.

#2: COPIC COLORING

You can also use Copic Markers or other markers on kraft cardstock. I like the unusual, muted look of the results. It is fun for something different!

For my example, I used Neenah Desert Storm Light Kraft and the Concord & 9th Banners and Blooms Stamp Set (SSS | C9). I first stamped the images with a Copic-friendly My Favorite Things Kraft Hybrid Ink and colored. I then stamped again – right on top – with VersaMark Ink and white heat embossed. For the sentiment, I used the Concord & 9th Ribbon Banner Die (SSS | C9).

#3: COLORED PENCILS

Coloring with colored pencils on colored cardstock is a very popular technique right now. And I especially like the results on kraft cardstock! I used Polychromos Colored Pencils (SSS | AZ) today but you can use any pencils you may have.

For my example, I used the Concord & 9th Posie Fill-In Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and Gina K Kraft Cardstock. I first stamped the images with Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA) and then applied heavy color with my Polychromos Colored Pencils (SSS | AZ) on top. By stamping first in white, I find the color “glows” more.

I also like how May Arts Natural Twine works so well with any kraft cardstock. Using it gives texture and interest… without too much bulk.

#4: OXIDE INKS (OR PIGMENT INKS)

If you stamp with dye inks on kraft cardstock, the cardstock just becomes dark… with very little color. (Unless you stamp with white pigment ink first as I did in my first example.) This is because dye ink absorbs into the paper. If you stamp with pigment inks on kraft cardstock, you will get better color since pigment ink “sits on top of” the paper.

However, my favorite ink on kraft cardstock for colored stamping is Distress Oxide Ink (SSS | EH). This ink is part-pigment and part-dye ink, so it is perfect! For my examples, I used Distress Oxide Inks (SSS | EH) to stamp the three layers of “hooray” from the Concord & 9th Triple Step Hooray Stamp Set (SSS | C9). To make them “glow” a bit more, I misted them lightly with water. I stamped the small sentiment and stars with Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA). To make the card “pop” a bit more, I added a few White Gelly Roll Pen highlights. Again, the image on the envelope is from the Concord & 9th Best Mail Ever Stamp Set.

#5: METALLICS

There is something so classy about using metallic embossing powders on kraft cardstock. (You can also try metallic inks but the shine is not as impressive.)

For this card, I used the fun Concord & 9th Semicircle Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and four embossing powders – Hero Arts Gold, Hero Arts Silver, Hero Arts White Satin Pearl, and Altenew Golden Peach. The shine is gorgeous!

For the sentiment portion, I used embossing powders along with the Concord & 9th Yay (SSS | C9) and You’re My Happy Dies (SSS | C9).

#6: TONE-ON-TONE & COLORED EMBOSSING

My next example shows the looks you can get with tone-on-tone stamping and colored embossing on kraft cardstock.

I used the Concord & 9th Bitty Burst Turnabout Stamp Set. I stamped it four times:

  1. with Ranger Garden Patina Embossing Powder to show how vivid colored embossing powders are on kraft.
  2. with Versamark Ink to show a tone-on-tone look.
  3. with clear embossing to show a darker and shiny tone-on-tone look.
  4. with Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA) to get a soft look.

For the sentiment, I combined a Concord & 9th Yay (SSS | C9) die cut along with a stamped Simon Says Stamp Emphatic Stamp Set greeting. I also added a few orange gemstones.

#7: PERFECT PEARLS

If you are looking to add a bit of shimmer to your kraft cards, try Perfect Pearls Pigment Powder. It can be used with any pigment ink, such as the two I used today – VersaMark Ink and Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA).

I used the Perfect Pearls Pigment Powder on a background that I made with the new Concord & 9th Sketched Stripes Stamp Set (SSS | C9). I then added pieces created with the Concord & 9th Rainbow Wishes Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and Dies (SSS | C9). I really like the bright colors on top of the kraft background. And the shimmer from the Perfect Pearls Pigment Powder adds a nice touch.

You can see a bit of the shimmer here…

  5. What a wonderful teacher you are! Thank you for sharing your tips and techniques.
All your ideas are so beautiful.

  6. Are you now using the Gemini rather than the Sizzix machine for die cutting? If so, what are the reasons you are making the switch?

  7. I love your work & you tube videos. You are just so talented. I do have a problem with markers I have to ask about. I have been using Altenew markers and Stampin’ Up stampin Blends and Stampin’ write markers. I am having trouble with the inks/colors bleeding thru the card stock or papers, no matter how heavy the papers/card stock. Do other new stampers have this issue or am I doing something wrong. I am getting so frustrated. I’ve resorted to colored pencils which I like the look but hate to miss out on the markers. Any hints or tips? Thank you so much, Kathryn Gagne kjgagne54att.net.
