Distress Oxide Water Painting

Hello. Today is all about getting more out of your Distress Oxide Inks (or traditional Distress Inks) by painting over them with water. The results are subtle and beautiful.

Distress Oxide Inks react with water and give a soft, white-ish look. Today I show how you can cover a background with Oxide Ink and then paint over it with water. This does work with traditional Distress Ink, but will look a bit different.

For my first example, I white heat embossed several images from the Simon Says Stamp Even More Spring Flowers Stamp Set on white cardstock. I then used my Mini Ink Blending Tool to apply Mermaid Lagoon and Blueprint Sketch Distress Oxide inks very generously on top. Next, I painted in the outline flowers with water. The Oxide Ink reacts with the water and becomes softer in those areas. So pretty! I added a sentiment using the new Simon Says Stamp Big Thanks Dies and Simon Says Stamp Big Thanks Words Stamp Set… along with a few White Nuvo Drops.

My next example is very similar, but I instead used Lucky Clover, Cracked Pistachio, and Forest Moss Distress Oxide Inks for the background. I like how the water caused these particular ink colors to get softer with a bit of a blue tint. The dots were created with Morning Dew Nuvo Drops.

After applying Mermaid Lagoon and Peacock Feathers to this next background, I painted the images with water. I let it dry and then painted again with a Twisted Citron Oxide Ink and water mix. This gives a green tint to the images…

My last example shows a bold Candied Apple and Abandoned Coral Background. I again painted with water… and then a mix of Squeezed Lemonade Distress Oxide Ink and water. I love that creamy look!

For heat embossed sentiments, I like to use Gina K Detail White Embossing Powder. A perfect image!

  1. Thanks for reminding me about Distress Oxides and water. I love the effect and will try them with a water brush. You’re a good teacher!

  2. Very Pretty. I just received the newest set of Oxide Inks, and have yet to use them. This will be the first way I use them. Thanks for more ideas,

  3. What a beautiful soft look this technique gives Jennifer. I love the subtleness of the end result, it’s another great way to stretch our supplies! Thank you for sharing with us, Lisa x

  4. I made a St. Patrick’s Day card using this technique with the Distress Oxide greens. It is just fabulous if I do say so myself. Thanks for the inspiration, Jennifer.

  5. What a great technique this is! I love these distress oxide inks and the more you show us the better I like them. They are so many ways to use them and they always produce a wonderful finished product. Thank you, again!

  6. I love the look of these cards with all the vibrant colors! I tried the technique using the Black Soot Oxide and had a little trouble with it. When I tried to directly apply the pad to paper my ink pad seemed much drier than yours even though it was a fairly new pad that had not been used. All of my colors seem drier and harder to apply and blend than yours. Have you reinked your pads with extra ink ?
Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful techniques!

  7. This is such a fun technique and your cards are just gorgeous, Jennifer! It’s amazing the way the colors emerge with the water. Can’t wait to try this!
I learn so much from you and thank you for your inspiration.

  8. What a great technique! I only have 6 Distress Oxide Inks in basic colors. But I imagine I can get the look of more than one ink if I apply light and heavy pressure in different area. I’m also going to try using the regular Distress Inks and see how that works out. Also, I wonder if you apply the Ranger Glaze to the DO Inks after the card is complete but without having a raised sentiment, if the glaze would pop the color?

  9. When Tim Holtz reposted your instagram video I knew I had to watch it.
I totally love it and I am definitely going to have to try this one.
Thanks for sharing and for everything that you do!

  10. Those are just gorgeous! I don’t have Oxide inks, but I do have Distress inks, so I’ll have to give it a try with those. Thanks for another wonderful video with great instruction and inspiration.

  11. Loved seeing this video! The techniques you show are always fabulous. Loved seeing how these cards changed and became even more awe inspiring as you worked. Time to find some oxide ink! 🙂

  12. Could you mix the regular Distress Ink with the Oxide Inks? I was thinking about when you paint over the flower petals.
