See-Through Die Cut Cards

Hello! I am always looking for new ways to use my dies… especially my background dies since they are a big investment. Well today I share how to create see-through die cut cards. They are fun!

Background dies are quite an investment. But I really like them! Therefore, I like yo share for new ways to use them. (Check out THIS video.) Today’s see-through card designs are fun, and can be created with other smaller dies, too.

My first example features a see-through card created with the Hero Arts Butterfly Confetti Die (SSS | EH | HA). (Watch the video for the how-to!) I added Hero Arts Nesting Rounded Rectangle (SSS | HA) die cuts to all sides of the die cut card panels.

The Memory Box Drifting Side Butterfly Die is so pretty and can be used in many ways. (See below!) I added Copic coloring, Tonic Aqua Shimmer, and Morning Dew Nuvo Drops for shine. The sentiment is from the Birch Press Sending You Love Stamp Set.

Here you can see the see-through die cutting…

This second design is very similar but with different products. I created the card panels with the Hero Arts Flower Confetti Die (SSS | HA | EH) and added a Memory Box Delightful Daisy die cut. This die cut is so fun!

I added Gold Nuvo Glitter Drops to the center of the flowers for shine and texture. And the sentiment is from the Memory Box Wirework Hearts Stamp Set.

You can create a see-through card with pretty much any background die.

This next example shows a see-through card design using layering background dies. I am a huge fan of layering background dies. Although the price is higher, there are SO many wonderful things you can do with them! (Check out THIS video for more ideas.) For this card, I glued the first two background layers of the Birch Press Cherish Layering Dies together. This forms the front panel of the card. Then I used the third layer for the back of the card.

I added Memory Box Have a Heart white die cuts to all sides, along with a Create A Smile Twice Hello Die Cut (SSS | CAS) and stamped “hugs enclosed” from the Simon Says Stamp Crafty Friend Stamp Set.

Here you can see how amazing the see-through design with layering background dies looks…

The Birch Press Cherish Layering Dies are fun – and I show another way to use them below. Here you can see the spot to write a message in the inside…

I simply can’t get enough of the Birch Press Avalon Layering Dies! (This set was on My Favorite Crafty Things of 2017 list.) Again, I used the first two layers from the dies for the front of the card… and the third layer to act as the back of the card. Check out that layering detail. It is gorgeous…

The front of the card features the Memory Box Tree Blossom Stitched Circle Frame Die and Create A Smile Twice Hello Die (SSS | CAS). After doing all the die cutting, this card comes together quickly!

And, again, the spot to write a message on the inside…

The next card is a bit different – only the front of the card is see-through. I used one layering die from the Birch Press Cherish Layering Die Set to form the card front. The card back is solid cardstock. I created the colorful heart by painting Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (SSS | HA) over a white heat embossed Memory Box Wirework Heart. The sentiment is from the Simon Says Stamp Crafty Friend Stamp Set.

Here you can see a Memory Box Have a Heart Dies white heart die cut on the inside of the card. This is the perfect spot to write a personal message.

You can also make cards with see-through elements instead of backgrounds. This one features the Birch Press Fiori Heart Layer Die Set. I created a heart window on the front of my card. I then adhered the first layer of the Birch Press Fiori Heart Layer Die Set on the front of the card over the window. The second layer is adhered to the back of the window.

And the third layer? That is in the inside of the card. Here you can see how you can see through the front. I really liked doing this design!

Using some leftover pieces and the same supplies, I created a non-see-through bonus card. The background features the Hero Arts Flower Confetti Die (SSS | HA | EH). I adhered all the little remaining die cut pieces back onto the background for dimension. I also used the Memory Box Drifting Side Butterfly Die but created a full butterfly from it. (Check the video to see how!) The “handmade hugs” is from the Birch Press Sending You Love Stamp Set.

  1. I love Jennifer Macguire University! I never fail to learn new things from you! You really do make a pitch for these layering background dies. They’re a big investment, but you’ve shown so many ideas on how to use them beyond the obvious, that they are seeming more like a “good” investment! These cards are gorgeous, especially the heart one! I love that one the most! Thanks for always sharing your creativity and talent!

  2. Beautiful cards! I will be using some of my small dies to try and make my own see-thru background. Thank you for sharing your amazing creativity, I learn so much.

  3. I will be looking at some of my regular dies to see if I can duplicate your see-through cards. The layering ones are nice, but pricey. Maybe I’ll give a hint to the family for a birthday gift šŸ™‚

  4. Okay, I was thinking how beautiful your cards are but I don’t have a die cutter, so dang it all, I can’t make any of them. Then I thought about it. I have lots of paper punches and what is a die cutter but a big, huge, paper punch, right? So I can do some of these. I think I have a butterfly punch and a heart punch too. I am so totally going to try what you did! Oh my gosh, I love you Jen! LOL Is it okay for me to say that? You totally showed me some beautiful cards and you showed me that even someone without a die cutter but with some paper punches can make cards like this. I can’t wait to try this! Oh my gosh, I am going to get so creative thanks to you! You are the best, girl!

  5. LOVE these cards!!!!! They are beautiful and oh,so elegant. Hope to be able to get some of dies, one of these days. Thanks Jennifer!!! You are awesome!!

  6. Beautiful cards Jennifer!
I do have one question. Because you are folding down 1/8″ on the back panel, does this mean you have to trim 1/8″ from the front panel to make them even? I couldn’t figure this part out by watching the video.
    Please respond.

  7. Wow, what a gorgeous cards and great idea’s. I had never thought to use my die cuts like this. I love the card with the Birch Press Fiori Heart Layer Die Set, so awessome. Thanks for your your great and instructive video!

  8. These are very “interesting” cards! I can’t imagine anyone receiving one of these and NOT loving it!
As always, you made a great video!

  9. Jennifer, I have been binge watching your videos for the last several weeks while I’m at work. You amaze me with your talent and have inspired me to get back into card making (I transitioned to scrapbooking). Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊 šŸ’• (Though my bank account does NOT thank you šŸ˜‚)
