Off-The-Edge Die Cut Cards

Hi there! Today I am sharing an off-the-edge die cut card design. This technique is great for creating cards that are one-of-a-kind.

Who said cards have to be simple shapes like rectangles? With a little bit of partial die cutting, you can have a one-layer card with a fun die cut edge.

My first example uses cats and dogs from the new Essentials by Ellen Cat Lady and Essentials by Ellen Dog Lady stamp sets. I like that these sets can be used together so easily! I used a partial die cutting technique to cut the top portion of four furry friends along the top of a card. (Be sure to watch the video to see how I did this!)

I colored the cuties with Copic Markers and added a sentiment to the front.

Here you can see how the card works. I added my stamped and die cut panel to the front of a short notecard. However, it still fits in my envelope with no problem. Simple!

For my second example, I used partial die cutting on the right edge of my card. The images are from the Essentials by Ellen Dog Lady Stamp Set. I again did some quick coloring and added a sentiment. This card is going to our girl in college.

On the inside of the card, I added little paw prints.

  1. I can’t tell you how much I LOVE these cards! How creative! I’m definitely going to give this a try. I make cards and donate them to a local shelter for which I volunteer and they sell them to make some much-needed money. These would be big hits! Thank you for the great video and ideas.

    1. That is soooo awesome of you to do that for the shelter❣️❣️ God Bless you for your kindness. I’m going to look into this idea and see who would be interested in selling some cards in my area for non-profit local institutions. Any suggestions????? Thanks for the inspiring idea❤️
Jennifer McGuire impresses me daily with her amazing ideas. Fav. blog!

  10. Awww, these are doggone darling! You did a fab job coloring and die cutting – great ideas, Jennifer. I could feel your pain when you showed the smearing :[ But thank you for sharing that you make mistakes and have to start over sometimes, too. ♥

  11. I am loving your cards but without a die cutter I’m afraid I can’t create your cards. Wait a min., isn’t a die cutter just a very big paper punch? Could I do it that way as I have tons of paper punches? Or could I place the stamp on the top of the page and fussy cut it out? That would probably work too, right? I am going to play around with this and see if I can do it. Hey, if I could make a shaker card without a die cutter just by watching one of your videos, then maybe I can do this too. It’s worth a try, right? I would practice on scrap paper of which I have plenty. Mom gives me paper that has a mistake on it from her office but they don’t want to throw it away. I use it to print out recipes or coupons or as scrap for testing out stamps or to scribble on to see if a marker works or not. It’s usually not a huge mistake but something they can’t use but I can. I’ll try it on that. Will let you know if it works. It would have to be something simple, not to complex or big to cut out. Wish me luck!
