Off-The-Edge Die Cut Cards

Hi there! Today I am sharing an off-the-edge die cut card design. This technique is great for creating cards that are one-of-a-kind.

Who said cards have to be simple shapes like rectangles? With a little bit of partial die cutting, you can have a one-layer card with a fun die cut edge.

My first example uses cats and dogs from the new Essentials by Ellen Cat Lady and Essentials by Ellen Dog Lady stamp sets. I like that these sets can be used together so easily! I used a partial die cutting technique to cut the top portion of four furry friends along the top of a card. (Be sure to watch the video to see how I did this!)

I colored the cuties with Copic Markers and added a sentiment to the front.

Here you can see how the card works. I added my stamped and die cut panel to the front of a short notecard. However, it still fits in my envelope with no problem. Simple!

For my second example, I used partial die cutting on the right edge of my card. The images are from the Essentials by Ellen Dog Lady Stamp Set. I again did some quick coloring and added a sentiment. This card is going to our girl in college.

On the inside of the card, I added little paw prints.

  1. Yaaaaaay, Jennifer! I’ve frustrated self in the past in hoping to figure this out … and here you have it in a form I can actually “get” (color me visual)! Thank you to the moon & back for sharing your darling card and another fabby tutorial!

  2. You make everything so easy to follow. I look forward to all of your blog and youtube demos. Thank you for sharing your talent!

  3. Super cute cards!!!! I really need to try this!! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve messed up Nuvo drops!!!

  4. I don’t trust my eyes to see through my paper cutter and not amputate a doggie leg. I did it with a straight-edge and an X-acto knife and it was perfect. Very good video; thank you for sharing!

  5. Great cards, I enjoy it everytime when you show us your great idea’s. Somethimes it’s a reminder of something similar, most of the time it’s something new. Thanks!

  6. Fun idea on doing the over hang. Oh how sad that the dog’s nose ran.. at first I thought she was holding a leash along with the ball. Great images. I am a dog lover. Thanks for the video and thanks for keeping in the mistake that happened.

  7. These are absolutely adorable 😍🐶🐱! I’m just thinking of how I (as my name is Little Miss Monk 🙄😉) could avoid the color of the images bleeding through to the back which of course is visible in this kind of cards. When I use Copic-colored images with visible backside, I usually stick one more blank die-cute image to the back, but that doesn’t look good here 🤔. Any clue except of using colored pencils instead of markers 😳?

  8. I’m so often in awe of how simple and stunning your cards are, sometimes to the point of being intimidated! lol Then you show one of your “oops!” moments, and I think “she’s just like me!” Thank you for sharing the wonderful techniques, interesting layouts, and everything creative that goes along with it. But thank you most of all for showing that among the incredible artwork there are those boo-boos, too. You are the reason I bought a sand eraser and it’s saved many a card in the short amount of time I’ve owned it.

  9. So, so cute with the puppy dogs & kitty cats across the top! I know just who would love to get a card like that–now I just need that set!

  10. Great cards and technique! Ack! How I felt your pain when your Nuvo drops smudged! Glad you were able to salvage the cute pup for another project!

  11. This card is so I just love this card. I really like that it is different from other cards. I am so excited because I just bought the new Express and I will be able to make cards like this one easily. I am excited to try this technique. I absolutely love the dog lady. I will have to go and buy that set right away. Thanks for showing me a new technique.

  12. Love it. I was looking for a design for my friend’s birthday card., this was perfect
I used the Lawn Fawn Baked with Love set. Thank you for the inspiration

  13. Watched this a few nights ago, and forgot to leave a message 😊. I always love to see different shaped cards, and these are adorable! I am glad you saved your little dog for another project too, he would be lonely in the bin. Thanks for thr inspiration as always Jennifer, Lisa x

  14. I recognized Kristina’s cats right away! I’m sure she loved that! Sad to see what happened to your daughter’s card! But it’s nice of you to show your mistakes. I sometimes feel like I’m the only one who does klutzy things. LOL! I’ve done this technique with digital images and fussy them. Where there’s a will. . . . Thanks for all your inspiration!
