Liquid Watercolor Backgrounds + GIVEAWAY

Hello! Today I went super overboard creating cards with liquid watercolor backgrounds. It was such fun! Along with the techniques and examples, I have fun giveaways.

One of my favorite ways to craft is to sit down with a stack of paper and create a bunch of backgrounds. This is a great way to explore techniques… try new things… have fun… and get more comfortable with the products you have. In this video I share many ways I used the new Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS). Keep in mind – I am not a watercolor expert! I just had fun playing and thought you might, too. And I have LOTS of examples!

Again, all of my cards feature backgrounds created with the new Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS) and Tim Holtz Watercolor Paper. They come in 8 colors and are bright, pigment-based, transparent liquid watercolor. They are easy to blend and mix and you can dilute them to any desired color intensity with water. SUCH fun to play with!

My first several examples show backgrounds I created by quickly applying Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS) onto Tim Holtz Watercolor Paper along with a good amount of water. I like to use my heat gun to form puddles and lines in the color as it dries. I love the look! (Watch the video to better understand.)

Since this background has so much bold color as is, I kept the rest of the card simple. I created a frame with the Hero Arts Floral Border with Frame Die (HA | SSS) and added a Hero Arts Hello Stamp & Die (HA | SSS) sentiment to the center. Quick and easy!

Even though there are only 8 of the Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS), you can very easily mix them to create any colors you want. And by using more or less water, you can change how intense the results are.

I *really* like moving the watercolor around with my heat gun as it dries. So cool…

The next two cards show how you can get different looks just by changing the process a bit. For both, I put down a good amount of water and added drops of Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS). The card on the left shows the results after I moved the colors around a bit with my brush for a smooth look. The card on the right shows the results if you just leave it to dry after adding the watercolor drops. Really like the variety!

This next card shows a blue and purple watercolor background and features the Hero Arts Birds and Branches Frame (HA | SSS) and Bird and Banner Dies (HA | SSS), along with a sentiment from the Hero Arts Layered Topiary Stamp Set (HA | SSS).

Another die that works great for this style of card is the Hero Arts Reef Border & Frame Die (HA | SSS). I used it along with the Hero Arts Mermaid Kisses Stamp Set (HA | SSS).

For many of these next cards, I created windows using the new Hero Arts Nesting Rounded Rectangle Die Set (HA | SSS). This set has quickly earned a permanent spot on my desk. 🙂

This example also features the cutie Hero Arts Swan and Cattails Stamp Set (HA | SSS). What cuties! The sentiment is from the Hero Arts Support Prayers Love Stamp Set (HA | SSS). This set is special because 100% of the net profits go to the Kind Campaign!

I also used a slightly bigger Hero Arts Nesting Rounded Rectangle Die Set (HA | SSS) and Spellbinders Embossing Mat to emboss/impress around the window.

Another new stamp set that is really amazing is the Hero Arts Elephant Stamp Set (HA | SSS). SO realistic! I used my elephant along with a sentiment from the Hero Arts Huge Thanks Stamp Set (HA | SSS) and a window showing a watercolor piece.

The next few cards showcase a “drip and spritz” technique. I simply put small drops of Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS) onto my watercolor paper and spritzed them with water. The watercolor moves and creates fun results!

This card also features the Hero Arts Elephant Stamp Set (HA | SSS)…

Isn’t this next background fun?! I used a Hero Arts Nesting Rounded Rectangle Die Set (HA | SSS) to create an off-the-edge window and added a butterfly and sentiment from the new Hero Arts Swallowtail Stamp Set (HA | SSS).

I can’t get enough of this background technique! SOOoooo easy to do, too. Here, I added a Hero Arts Swan Die. Simple white die cuts can look amazing against busy backgrounds.

I wanted to keep the focus of this next card on the crazy-cool background, so I just added a simple Hero Arts Feather Die (HA | SSS) and simple sentiment.

My next card has two different watercolor pieces together to create a scene of sky and water. The water was created using the “drip and spritz” technique. The sky? That was a simple wash of color created my mixing a drop of Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS) with water. I also added a Hero Arts Swan Stamp Set (HA | SSS) swan and a sentiment from the Hero Arts Support Prayers Love Stamp Set (HA | SSS).

I like that the Hero Arts Swan Stamp Set (HA | SSS) includes the swan’s reflection that you can stamp on the water!

The Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS) are also excellent for adding color to stamped images. The color moves so well with the water that it takes little effort to get great results. Here, I used the gorgeous Hero Arts Magnolia Stamp (HA | SSS).

Since Hero Arts Liquid Watercolor (HA | SSS) are so easy to mix, you can easily add Perfect Pearls to create shimmer watercolor. It is hard to see the shimmer in the photo, but it is gorgeous in real life.

And finally, I created used my “shimmer watercolor” for this background. And I added a topiary created with the new Hero Arts Layered Topiary Stamp Set (HA | SSS).

Whew! That’s a lot of cards. However, Lila and I had SUCH fun making them!

  1. Thank you so much for making this video on using liquid watercolors! I’ve been seeing this product and wondering how you use it…now I know! I can’t wait to buy them and start playing. Your cards are just stunning with those amazing watercolor backgrounds!!

  2. I love the backgrounds you made with these liquid watercolors! They remind me a bit of alcohol ink backgrounds which makes me happy since love the look of them but with birds in my house can’t use them due to the smell. Definitely want to get these watercolors and try making backgrounds.

  3. Can’t wait to try this technique with some supplies I already have. I can’t just pick one product from the new catalogue. The Nasturtium bundle and the Rounded rectangle infinity die set are tied form my first choice with the Mouse tea party stamp set in a close second.

  4. Your cards are gorgeous and make me realize I need to play with mixed media a lot more! I love the floral frame die, I really think I need to get that to pair with some awesome backgrounds like yours! TFS!

  5. I can’t wait to try these beautiful backgrounds! I will be ordering the paints. I would not have known what was possible if you hadn’t put them in your blog. I am anxious to learn all kinds of techniques.
    Thank you

  6. Hi Jennifer! Thanks for sharing your talent! You don’t give yourself enough credit, I think your watercolor skills are fantastic. My fav new products are the rounded rectangle dies. I can see myself using them a lot. Thanks!

  7. Lila and you have done a spectacular job with these cards Jennifer! Hero Arts always has something new and different for us and while I had seen the elephants and fallen in love, after watching your video I think I’m going to NEED those beautiful liquid inks. Thanks so much to both of you for sharing and I hope you’re having a fun crafty weekend (we’re getting more snow…I’m pretty much over winter!). ~HUGS~

  10. An interesting technique, I am not sure that I would try. I think I would just keep doing watercolor my way, but I do like your cards

  11. Thank you Jennifer for doing this video even though you weren’t really up to it. Never apologize, I couldn’t tell because I was so taken by everything! This truly has to be one of my most favourite releases from Hero Arts. There is really nothing NOT to love. The Prayer set for the Kindness campaign is so wonderful and so needed to help out this world! The rounded nested rectangles, the Floral Wreath Die Set and then WOW! those great layering stamp sets – butterflies, elephants, swans. I am truly taken with the Liquid Watercolors and hope that we get them in my city in Canada or it will have to wait until the weather warms up so there is no freezing – LOL! I also think Lila’s card turned out marvelous and you were very lucky on Valentine’s Day to receive that card. Hard to go wrong when you start out with such quality products and a helping hand from Mom! She probably needs very little instruction by now, just some guidance. Thank you once again. Off to hop some more!

  23. Thank you so much for the inspiring video. I love the longer ones you do! Lila did a wonderful job on her cards. Love the way she used the pearls. I was so impressed with the use of the feather, swan and most of all the lovely backgrounds you did. I always pick up something I can add to my normal way of making a card.

  24. I do not find my comment, so will try again. Lila did a wonderful job helping you show the new liquid watercolors. They look so easy to use with the eye dropper. 25. Thank you, Jennifer…I live in Florida, so this is such a great and helpful video!! Love ALL of the different cards and techniques!

  26. Thanks for this video – great to see the liquid watercolours used in so many ways.
My favourite product from this release is the Huge Thanks set.

  27. What a gorgeous set of cards! Thanks for sharing all your techniques for using the liquid watercolours. Just love the water background of the swan card! I really like the new Topiary set.

  28. Love all the backgrounds especially when you see them on the finished cards. The swans are great but best is the big die cut one with the pieces you lift up. There were too many other things I really liked to mention.

  29. Wow! You must have had fun playing with these based on how many cards you produced while playing with them! I’m a little disappointed in how the colors dry back so much, or so muted, compared to the original color out of the bottle when wet. I guess that’s true of most watercolor though. Have you played with the liquid watercolors from Lawn Fawn and if so, do they respond the same? Off to go check out Kristina’s take on them and hopefully she compares (and contrasts) them to PhMartins too. TFS your thoughts on them! Great cards!!!

  30. Jennifer, thank you for another wonderful video, I love the backgrounds you created for your cards. It’s nice to see cards made out all the stamps and dies I liked best out of the new catalog.
