I enjoy die cutting just as much as I do stamping. Maybe even a bit more! Die cutting opens the door to many amazing new techniques. Today I share techniques and tips for layering die cuts to get dimensional results.

My first card features the new Altenew Peony Dream 3D Dies (ALT | SSS). This die set cuts all the pieces you need to create layered, dimensional, and realistic-looking flowers and leaves. They are fun to put together… kind of like a puzzle! I glued the pieces together with Tim Holtz Distress Collage Adhesive so that I could move them to the perfect position while wet… but then it would hold well when dry.

The background is heat embossed with White Satin Pearl Embossing Powder and the Altenew Pattern Play Diamonds Stamp (ALT | SSS). The tone-on-tone white makes a soft backdrop for the bold flower. The “hello” was cut with the new Altenew Simple Alphabet Dies (ALT | SSS) and covered with Tonic Aqua Shimmer Pen and Tonic Crystal Glaze.

My second card is very similar to the first. However, in the video I showed how to use Xyron Creative Station to layer the Altenew Peony Dream 3D (ALT | SSS) die cuts together. The Xyron Creative Station basically turns die cuts into stickers. (There are many other Xyron machines that do this, too.)

After I assembled the Altenew Peony Dream 3D (ALT | SSS) flower, I pressed Versamark Ink generously on top and covered it with two coats of clear embossing. This makes the flower look ceramic!

The “hugs” was also cut with the new Altenew Simple Alphabet Dies (ALT | SSS) and covered with Tonic Aqua Shimmer Pen and Tonic Crystal Glaze. Notice how I used the same colors of cardstock as my first example, but the clear embossing turns it darker…

My next card uses the incredible Altenew Rose Flurries 3D Dies (ALT | SSS). I show in the video how to also create “die cut stickers” with Couture Creations Double Sided Adhesive. (I just wanted to show a few options so that maybe you can determine which is best for you.) I started with white cardstock for all of the die cuts… and changed the colors of each piece with markers.

I used the Altenew Caps Bold Alphabet Dies (ALT | SSS) to die cut “hugs” from a white cardstock piece and arranged the Altenew Rose Flurries 3D (ALT | SSS) flowers above and below the open letters. The stamped sentiment is from the Altenew Adore You Stamp Set (ALT | SSS) and I added Lucy’s Cards Iridescent Jewels for shine.

My last card using the fantastic Altenew Spring Shower Cover Die (ALT | SSS). This can be used in so many ways!!! I die cut the background from white cardstock and glued it onto a white notecard. I again die cut more of the tiny flowers and leaves and colored them… and “pieced” them back into place on the card background. This is so therapeutic! I also added tiny white dot details with my White Gelly Roll Pen.

The “hello” was created with the Altenew Simple Alphabet Dies (ALT | SSS) … and the stamped sentiment is from the Altenew Adore You Stamp Set (ALT | SSS). I also added a few white pearls.

  1. The Peony Dreams has to be my favorite in this segment. The vivid colors are so cheerful! We`ll miss you while you’re gone!!

  2. I have to say first off that I showed my mom your cards. I think they are beautiful but then I’m a card maker. I think what you do is amazing but my mom has never seen what you do. She said she loved your cards, they were very pretty.
What do I like from this new release? I love Altenew and have a lot of their stamps. They are an amazing small company and because my sister is a small business person, I am in love with small business people, plus their merchandise is really great!
I love the Altenew Adore You because I am a lover of flowers. My aunt bought my mom some mini roses when my dad passed away I think last year. It was last year for sure. They are so pretty and we planted them outside. They bloomed 2 or 3 times last year and they are pink. I know they aren’t roses but they are flowers and when I get down with them and put them on a card, they will be so colorful! I would use them a lot for sure. I love the iridescent jewels too. I am so totally in love with sequins and my dance costumes are full of them. If you know just how much to use, they add just the right touch to cards and they are great for shaker cards.
Your cards are so beautiful and colorful and I wish I had a die cutter so I could make the one that says Sending Loves and Hugs with the colorful flowers and leaves inside the cut out and the one that says Hello, sending love and hugs. Love you Jen and thanks for giving us the chance to win something!

  3. I love the peony dies and the cards you made with them! Also the pattern play diamonds stamp which is so versatile! Thank you!

  4. What can I say, LOVE them all! All the florals are gorgeous and the stamps are fabulous too, I seriously have trouble picking just one, it is Another fabulous release! Thanks for all you share! Happy and prosperous 2018!

  5. Sometimes therapeutic is not the word that comes to mind when my bumbling fingers are working with those tiny pieces. Just love your work and have learned so much. Just got back into card making (talk about dried inks) and you are bringing me so many super techniques.

  6. Morning Jennifer,
Really enjoyed this video. The layering of Dies was amazing. My favorite set from Altenew is their Alphabet Caps Blod I love how you tapped them together to create Hugs and then used them as a peek -a-boo windsor for the flower dies. Beautiful combination. Thank you once again for all you share.

  7. I’m in love with ALLLL your card creations. But if I had to choose — I’d pick the last card and the Spring Shower Cover Die. I need some therapy.

  8. I have fallen in love with the Altenew peony design — you have to look twice to really appreciate the depth of the design. And Jennifer you just bring it alive on your card — your talent amazes me — inspiration in pictures.

  9. Your cards are so lovely. I am always amazed at the different cards you create. My favorite Product is the Allenew Spring Shower Cover Die. So many options!

  10. I love the ideal of the letters-as-windows, so I’d happily play with either of the alphabet stamp dies. Your cards are so lovely. The diamond pattern in the background is really a nice touch, too. 🙂

  11. Great video, always appreciate the tips and inspiration! The Spring Shower Cover Die is my favourite but, I will be wishing for most of the items in this release.

  12. I adore your last card, using the Rose Flurries die & the Caps Bold dies. The color and dimension is stunning. My favorite card, EVER!

  13. Oh gosh sommany choices. But I have to go with largecapital letters hugs die cut. The boldness of the large letters definitely sets a card like that apart!
    Thank u!!

  14. Please share the marker colors and the paper colors you used to make these cards. They are so beautiful. Just starting out I thought I might feel more confident using the dies if my first run would be successful. The color choices are the hardest part.
