Alcohol Ink Lift With Stencils + GIVEAWAY

Hello! Many people have requested that I share more ideas for using alcohol inks. So today I have an alcohol ink “lifting” technique with stencils! If you don’t have alcohol ink – no worries. I will tell you another way to get a similar look.

There are *many* alcohol ink techniques out there! (Be sure to check out Tim Holtz videos for ideas.) Today’s particular technique is fun for many reasons. First… I love stencils! Second… if you have an alcohol ink background you aren’t thrilled with, try this technique. It gives it a new look. Third…it is addictive!

I created a lot of examples! Some use alcohol ink on vellum…. some on yupo paper. Let’s start with the vellum.

I used my Ranger Alcohol Inks, Alcohol Blending Solution, and a Ranger Alcohol Ink Felt Applicator to apply color to vellum. (Be sure to watch the video for the different color combos and techniques used.) Once the vellum was dry, I put the Simon Says Stamp Folk Dance Stencil over the colored vellum and used a Mini Ink Blending Tool to apply a tiny bit of Alcohol Blending Solution onto the open spaces. This “lifts” the alcohol ink away and leaves a softer color behind.

I die cut the colored vellum pieces with a large heart die from the Mama Elephant Favor Bag Accessory Love Die Set. I added the hearts onto white notecards and kept the card design simple. Most of the cards have leaves cut from silver/shimmer vellum using the Simon Says Stamp Modern Flowers Die. I love the soft touch these leaves add. I also adhered gems to each card.

This first card sentiment features the Simon Says Stamp Perfection Die and Thankful Heart Stamp Set. The other card above uses the Simon Says Stamp Take Care Die and Let Us Rejoice Stamp Set.

These next two examples are my favorite color combos! I used the Simon Says Stamp Hey Love Die and Best Ever Stamp Set.

You can really see the stencil’s pattern in the background of this. It looks dreamy…

This technique doesn’t always give perfect results, but if you are careful and only apply a bit of the Alcohol Blending Solution over the stencil, it can look amazing!

This one is so bright and happy. I used the Simon Says Stamp Hello Beautiful Die.

Lila wanted me to try creating a rainbow background… and it was SUPER easy! I just applied pink, yellow, green, and blue alcohol inks onto my Ranger Alcohol Ink Felt Applicator and swiped it across the vellum. The results are soft. And after doing the alcohol ink lifting technique over the stencil, I get a unique patterned vellum.

I used the same rainbow technique for this next card… but this time on Yupo Paper instead of vellum. Check out how vivid the colors are! I tell ya – you can get a lot of different looks from alcohol inks.

The “hugs” letters and hearts were created with the Simon Says Stamp Archie Alphabet and Cupid’s Border Die.

The rest of my examples use the alcohol ink lifting technique with Yupo Paper. These are much more intense and vivid!

I really like the look of the Simon Says Stamp Archie Alphabet Die Cut letters on the bright backgrounds.

These two cards showcase the Simon Says Stamp Here For You and Perfection Die.

You can also create “clean” alcohol ink backgrounds on Yupo Paper by swiping the inks back and forth. Easy!

In the video, I also share two “extra” cards. This first one features scraps of alcohol ink backgrounds that I had leftover after die cutting the large hearts. I put the pieces behind windows cut with the Simon Say Stamp Repeating Circles Die. I again used the Simon Says Stamp Hey Love and Modern Flowers Dies.

To see how I created this last card, be sure to watch the video. It uses alcohol inks blended on cardstock over the Simon Says Star Medallion Stencil.

NO ALCOHOL INKS?

If you don’t have alcohol inks, you can get a similar with Distress Inks or other inks that react with water. To do so, use white cardstock and heavily apply Distress Ink. The more the better! Then lay a stencil on top. Lightly pounce over the stencil with a bit of water on an ink blending foam. After you remove the stencil and let it dry, it should look similar to the results you see on the above examples. Basically you are “lifting” the ink with water! You can see this in action HERE.
