Easy Alcohol Ink Backgrounds + Blog Hop + Giveaways

Hello! Today I share fast and easy ways to create bold backgrounds with alcohol ink. This technique is fascinating! I also am part of a blog hop celebrating a great new product release.

I remember using alcohol ink mannnnny years ago when I first started stamping. I would use it to make coasters! Well I have been getting a lot of requests to do a video on them since they are popular in the art world right now. These techniques are easy and addictive. AND there are many more things you can do with them. (But we will have to save those for another video!)

I made a TON of examples in my videos. But the background techniques are pretty much the same on all. Be sure to watch the video to see how! I used Ranger Yupo Paper for all of my examples, along with Ranger Alcohol Inks. I also used a bit of Ranger Alcohol Blending Solution and normal rubbing alcohol.

(Please be safe when using these products. Visit the company’s websites for more info.)

Let’s look at the examples:

I am simply in love with the new Simon Says Stamp Rejoice and Holy Stars Dies. They are beautiful! I cut the star from Courture Creations 12×12 Glitter Paper and added Studio Katia Silver Foil Crystal accents.

The shimmer vellum I used on all my cards is from the Grafix Vellum Assortment Pad. And I backed all my white cardstock with Couture Creations Double Sided Adhesive before die cutting. I am really liking this adhesive!

These next cards are similar, but use the Simon Says Stamp O Holy Night Die. Those bold backgrounds go nicely with these die cuts.

Sometimes simple is best! Here, I die cut the Simon Says Stamp Wise Men Still Seek Him Die from white Courture Creations 12×12 Glitter Paper and added the words onto vellum… and then the card.

This next card features the Simon Says Stamp Bare Tree Oval Die and SSS / Gina K We Can Do This Stamp Set. 100% of the SALES of the We Can Do This Stamp Sets go to hurricane relief. AMAZING. (More on that stamp set in a few days!)

The new Simon Says Stamp Stained Glass Stamp Set is very detailed, so I decided to keep the rest of these next two cards simple…

Check out that bold background. Wow. Effortless to make, too!

I am also crazy about the new Simon Says Stamp Fa La La Stamp Set and Die Set. I like how it fills a card nicely.

This next card is smaller – 3.5″x 5.5″ – and has the fa la la die cut hanging off the edge. It will still fit in a normal envelope nicely…

What is the saying? “Go bold or go home?” I guess you could say that about some of these backgrounds!

You can also heat emboss on alcohol ink backgrounds, but be careful not use too much heat. The new Simon Says Stamp Center Cut Background Stamp was something I begged Kristina Werner to design. You can take the center out of it! So cool – she nailed it!

This simple and sweet sentiment is from the new Simon Says Stamp Merry and Bright Stamp Set.

And last but not least, the rainbow background that I decided to leave as is. Swoon!

By the way, I am sure folks will ask which alcohol inks are my favorite. Really, it depends on the colors you are drawn to. But here are the ones I used a lot in the video. Keep in mind these are mostly bold colors:

  1. Thank you Jennifer for all the inspiration. My favorite are the o holy night and rejoyce dies. They are sold out and I am heartbroken. I asked my husband If I can please have an arts and craft room and he just smiled which usually means yes, just give me some time. So I am happy. Retirement here I come, hopefully sooner than later. My granddaughter wants to have her own desk with “stuff” to create cards with me (she is 7) so we will have a lot of fun.

  2. Wow! Your cards are absolutely gorgeous!! I love this technique and will definitely have to give it a try. My favorite from the new release is the rejoice die, but it is so hard to choose!

  3. I love Kristina’s background stamp! It’s so pretty and can be used year round! I have lots of alcohol inks that I used to make ornaments with a few years ago. I’ll have to get them out and try some backgrounds!

  4. Such beautiful cards. I love the Holy Stars and all the die cut words with the shadow die…they are so unique. “Wise Men Still Seek Him” has always been a favorite Christmas saying!

  5. My fav is the lg background stamp that the center comes out of. I also like the rejoice, the stars, and the oh holy night. The Fa la la is neat also. They’re all great!

  6. I really like the O Holy Night die used with the holy star–what a beautiful combination and that is my favorite Christmas carol.

  7. What spectacular backgrounds! This looks totally addictive. Thank you for the inspiration; I may try blowing on wet paint or wet zig backgrounds.

  8. Jennifer- you never cease to amaze me. I can’t wait to try this technique! My favorite product was the “Wise Men Still Seek Him” stamp and die cut. All of these SSS products are beautiful. I see a big order coming up. I never would have thought of these backgrounds for Christmas cards!

  9. What stunning backgrounds! I must get out my alcohol inks! I can’t understand how card makers would not want to experiment with the alcohol inks after watching your video and seeing your beautiful cards! Difficult to choose one favorite from all the wonderful releases but I think I’ll go with Oh Holy Night.

  10. Wow, all that swiping and look how your turned them!! So gorgeous and I love how Kristina’s lettering based style just compliments your cards perfectly!! It is so difficult to pick a favorite out of this lovely release, but I’ll settle for the stained glass technique stamp.

  11. What amazing cards! I need to get my inkers out and play. I really like that background stamp with the center that pops out. Using the center pop out stamped randomly on a background would be a nice look. Would love to see one designed in the shape of a huge snowflake with a smaller snowflake pop out.

  12. I ran to the craft store to pick-up these inks and cannot remember the last time I had such fun! You are right–very addictive! My question is how often do you change the alcohol? If you change your colors, do the old ones (in the alcohol) bleed into the new colors?

  13. Beautiful cards! I love bold colors. I’m new to card making and am intrigued by these alcohol inks. I’m going shopping!

  14. Beautiful! I always find your work inspiring. I think I like those Holy Star dies best in this release – but it’s not easy to choose.

  15. Hello! Jennifer, the minute I saw the “rejoice” stamp I knew that would be my favorite. Christmas is a time for rejoicing, but so is each day. Thanks to you and Kristina and SSS for the designs in this release, as well as to Gina K for a fantastic and generous stamp set!!

  16. I am one of those people who purchased the alcohol inks (although it was only a few months ago), and hadn’t figured out what to do with them yet. Thank you for the tutorial. I am looking forward to opening that box and getting some backgrounds made!

  17. I just tried this technique tonight. Let it dry and then buffed it with a dry paper towel but that took the color off. So I tried it again. Let it dry and buffed with an old dry baby wipe, the same thing happened. Tried a third time. This time I want to try a fixative . Is there a certain one that you suggest? I would like to be able to adhere embellishments to it. Will they stick once I have a fixative on ?

  18. How to choose just one?!? All these are stunning. The bare tree die looks so versatile with many applications & the “Wise men still seek him” die set perfectly sums up Christmas.

  19. I love the look of Alcohol inks, but have been intimidated to use them, even though I do own some.
You always make it look so easy, so I guess it’s time to get them out and play.

  20. You’ve really inspired me with this video Jennifer ! I really excited and looking forward to trying these techniques out ! My favorite new products are the holiday sentiment wafer dies . I love how you used them in the video .

  21. These are wonderful, Jennifer! Many thanks for sharing the technique.

I often use alcohol inks with other crafts and have about 60 colours. I don’t have Yupo paper on hand but am about to run off to try this with other surfaces including vellum.

    Thanks again! 😀

  22. Thanks for reminding me to dust off my alcohol inks! They’ve been neglected for years :@. Being impatient to use them, I opted for vellum panels instead of digging out my glossy paper. (Being in the midst of moving one’s craft hoard really is a test in patience. Epic fail here. 😁) I love the finish on vellum. A bit less time to work with it but it still gives just the extra minute to be able to move the colors together with a brush!

  23. What a great video! Such beautiful backgrounds and it was so interesting to see how you made them into cards. You really got a jump on making holiday cards! I like the idea of the Center Cut stamp. You are right – it makes it very versatile to use as a background stamp or with a sentiment in the middle.

  24. Your backgrounds are beautiful and I learn an awful lot of helpful ideas from watching your videos – I do not use many stamp as I hand draw all the things I put on my cards but I do incorporate some of your beautiful background ideas. I live in eastern Canada and would love to win this giveaway.

  25. Help! I loved this and tried it with Ranger inks and Lupo paper. After 24 hours the colors will still come off on my fingers. I sprayed them after that with a spray acrylic and they look nice, but color still comes off. I k ow you said you rub with a cloth, I think. But it just takes the color with it. Help! What did I do wrong?? I’d like to use these for bases, as I bought the holy star and the O Holy Night dies. Thanks

  26. After I saw your video on laminating with the deco foil and adhesive,I bought one . your instructions are clear and concise. I have saved all your videos to try all the different techniques. Thank You!
    Karen
