Hi there! Who doesn’t love a technique that seems magical? Today I show how to use three different inks creatively with stencils to create a velvety background.

Stencils are a great tool to use on cards since they have a low price point and can be used for many great techniques. Today I show a “magic” technique that can be done with several types of inks.

Distress Oxide Inks and Distress Inks react when they come in contact with water. You can apply the inks to white cardstock and then “stamp” with a water-misted stencil. Wherever the water touches, the paper because lighter and velvety looking. For this card, I used the Hero Arts Abstract Waves Stencil. The mermaid and die cuts are from the Hero Arts May My Monthly Hero Kit and the sentiment is from the Hero Arts Color Layering Goldfish Stamp Set.

The background on this next example was created by applying Hero Arts Antigua Shadow Ink and Hero Arts Navy Shadow Ink to white cardstock and then inking over a stencil with VersaMark Ink. This fabulous stencil is also from the Hero Arts May My Monthly Hero Kit. The sentiment? It’s from the Hero Arts You’re So Lovely Stamp Set.

  7. Because it seems like they move a little and I get ink where I don’t want it. I probably just need to tape it down better and give it another try I love the way these came out and with just water I think it’s brilliant I can’t wait to try it I have some distress exciting and I want to get that wave stencil it is so pretty!   17. I love your beautiful cards! Mermaids are so beautiful but it’s to bad they aren’t real. My sister who sells her photography on purses among other things was asked by a customer if she had a purse with a mermaid on it. She could have used one of your cards! LOL
    Do I like to use stencils? Oh yeah but sometimes I don’t think I use them right. I’ve always loved them and I’ve used them on flour sack dishtowels when I painted on them. I have to watch your video and see what you did. Love them all!

  19. Oh my goodness! This set is stunning and the stencil backgrounds you did are incredible. I love the colour combo and the wave stencil so much, both the colours and the stencil give such a lovely feeling. I use stencils but now while I’m getting ready to go to sleep I might have to run to my craft room and try these combos out. Who needs sleep when you have new ideas to try! I was hunting for where to get the ocean stencil. Fell in love with it immediately! Yup it’s on my list! Thanks for always sharing!

  25. I love using stencils on cards! But so far mostly with texture paste cuz I haven’t had much luck with ink not spilling under the stencil.
