I have been longing to use the Hero Arts Pine Branches Stamp and Die Set. I like that this set can be used for any occasion, not just for the holidays. However, this technique could work with any stamp set and coordinating dies.

I started by die cutting the Hero Arts Pine Branches dies repeatedly from a piece of Inkadinkado masking paper. I then placed the large negative-space mask on a piece of green cardstock, and placed all of the positive pieces on a blue piece. (Gotta love a technique that results in two cards!) Finally, I applied Tsukineko Delicata White Shimmer Ink over the masks with a Jumbo Dauber. You could use any ink for this with any blending tool… lots of possibilities!

Next, I stamped the coordinating image on top of the inked areas on the green card and in the open areas on the blue card using a darker ink. The perfect fit!

I really wanted to add a “merry christmas” and “hello” sentiment die cuts to my cards, but they got a bit lost on the background. Therefore, I created focal point frames with with my Hero Arts Nesting Circles and Nesting Rectangles Dies. (Loving these!)

I hope this inspires you to do some masking with your coordinating dies. It’s a technique that will work with any stamp and die set!

  1. Oh yes, I do use coordinating dies. I am not really good at fussy cutting.. yes I know I have to practice, but dies make everything so much easier. 😀 Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas and the chance to win.

  2. Yes, I do use coordinating dies all the time. I do have an e-cutter, which I also use frequently but you just can’t get that beautifully finished, rounded edge you get when you use dies. And, as an added bonus, my stamps and coordinating dies are all wonderfully organized using the system you shared with us. I have never been so organized in my life and now I know what I have…so I actually use it rather than just collecting it.

  3. Beautiful and creative cards, as usual! I don’t have any coordinating die yet. Recently, I bought some basic form dies.

  4. Oh my goodness yes! I use coordinating dies–they are a life saver and so fun to use in different ways! Your simple cards are extraordinary!

  5. I have yet to purchase a coordinating die for any of my stamp sets. I usually opt for just the stamp set because I can buy more stamps!

  6. I do have and use coordinating dies with stamps. Once you get the hang of them they are pretty much an essential item, especially for doing a few cards at a time!! I seriously love those Hero Arts nesting dies! They have a heap of sizes unlike most of the others that have maybe 4-6. Would seriously love to win these and the stamp/die set too! Thanks for the chance! Gorgeous cards by the way and I will have to try getting the Delicata ink!

  7. I use my coordinating dies yo cut out the coloured or stamped images. This masking technique with the shimmery ink is beautiful! I love, love the nesting dies from Hero Arts and would love to win them!
Thanks for your wonderful videos and ideas!

  8. I do have some coordinating dies, but have never used them like you have. Now I have to go run and try this technique. 🙂

  9. I love using coordinating stamp & die sets!! I loved this video showing a great technique. I would love to try it with the products you used.

  10. I use my coordinating dies and stamps so much more often then when I just have that stamps. I used to work at a preschool, and for times sake for our afternoon projects we would pre-cut some of the larger pieces. After 2 years on that job, I really don’t like fusssy cutting.. I love that some newer sets are coming out with dies and stamps together. I snatch those up, I makes my job so much easier.
    Thank you

  11. I have a few smaller sets with coordinating dies. If the set is large, i would rather save my money and cut the images put by hand.

  12. I try not to buy coordinating dies just because it becomes too pricey. Also, some of them don’t look good on my designs on my cards with “white” outside of the stamped image, I don’t buy them. When it looks good with “white” parts, AND, it’s too intricate to even fancy cut, I buy the coordinating dies. Not often tho.

  13. I love the stamps with coordinating dies. I don’t have a lot of them only fancy cuts. Fussy cutting is fine when I have the time.
I love this technique and am going to get to it. I just found the masking paper.

  14. I do use some coordinating dies. I like the versatility they provide, but don’t feel like I need them for every stamp set.

  15. Every time I check your blog I get a new favorite! LOVE these cards–so inspiring, Jennifer! I didn’t know Delicata had new colors, but until I can get them I now have the PP metallic set thanks to another of your videos! That HA stamp set is going on the top of my wishlist! Love your sentiment treatment–gonna use that for sure!

  16. What another great technique. Love the stamps and those dies. I have a set of the circles, but I really could use a set of rectangles. We all love the new “special” products, but what we really need are the BASICS. Thank you.

  17. I do have some coordinating dies but it can be pricey. I love the Hero Arts nesting dies! I love your gorgeous
cards and need to get the Delicata ink. Thank you for the chance!

  18. I love using coordinating dies. They off so much versality and convenience for dimensional layering, masking, etc. Love them!

  19. I don’t have very many coordinating dies, to save money i fussy cut a lot, but i did purchase the circle dies. Thanks, Connie

  20. Thanks for this lesson on masking with dies. Can’t wait to try it. Yes I do use coordinating dies. Just made a Halloween card from the HA Happy Howloween die and stamp set.

  21. Need to make a correction to my previous post. I incorrectly stated I used HA Happy Howlloween stamp and die set. It was actuallya Lawn Fawn set. Sorry?

  22. I try to purchase the coordinating dies when buying stamp sets. It just makes life so much easier. That being said, I do only have a few of these right now but have a looong wish list. These are at the top of the list.

  23. Super cute Jennifer. Are you all settled in your new home? It is a job in itself, this moving thing…hahah I speak from experience here…..teehee. Thanks for sharing.

  24. Wonderful technique using your coordinating dies and stamps. I would love to have coordinating dies for all my stamps but unfortunately only have some due to my budget.

  25. The shimmer on your cards looks amazing! I don’t always buy coordinating dies to keep the costs down. It also depends on the type of stamps and the way I expect to use them.

  26. I am obsessed with dies of all kinds. They give you so many options for multiple projects, and i would love to win this set. I am always in awe of your videos and techniques. Thank you for this opportunity!

  27. I’ve only recently gotten a die cutter
so far I have not used coordinating dies because
I have not purchased any yet

  28. I only have dies for a couple MFT cutesy stamp sets that seemed like a hassle to cut out. I don’t normally think about spending money on dies for botanical stamps since I don’t tend to layer them or I just mask when I do. This technique creates a whole new reason to have them, but as expensive as dies are, I think I’d still rather buy 2 more stamp sets than the coordinating dies to match a set I already own. Still, this was beautiful and I will have to keep it in mind when a good sale comes along!

  29. Love the cards! I have several stamps with dies to match, I really love using them. I don’t do well with cutting things out. I have lots of dies, I don’t have the circle or rectangle dies tho.

  30. I do use coordinating dies! I try to avoid buying them though, to save money, unless the stamp set has a lot of little items or complicated-shaped stamps that would be easier to have a coordinating die for. Anyways, thanks for sharing your ideas!

  31. I do use coordinating dies and I use them when ever I can. I haven’t used them in the way you showed today but it makes me want to try that technique. Nice cards, thanks for sharing.
