Guest Artist: Stamped Watercolor with Marika Rahtu

Hello and welcome! One of my favorite things to do on my blog is to share the work of fellow cardmakers who I admire. Today I have a very special guest artist – Marika Rahtu – sharing how to elevate a simple stamped image using watercolor.

Marika is from Finland and I am mesmerized by her videos. I’m impressed by how she takes limited supplies and turns them into masterpieces. I encourage you to visit her blog and YouTube channel. I am certain she will quickly become a favorite of yours, too.

On her card for today’s video, Marika started by “stamping” a Altenew Lacy Scrolls flower with a light Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pen on watercolor paper. The image is not perfect or crisp but this does not matter – she is simply using it as a guide for her watercolor. Using just two Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens and a bit of water, Marika “traced” the stamped image and created her own watercolor masterpiece. So beautiful! I like how she kept the rest of her card clean and simple to keep the focus on the stunning flowers. She added a bit of interested with irRESISTible Embellisher dots.

  11. I am a big fan of both you, Jennifer, and Marika, so this was a double treat for me! I agree with the description “mesmerizing” for Marika’s colouring videos. And your video with this stamp set and the coloured pencil technique is what convinced me to buy it. I’m so grateful for all the artists who share their talent online and offer such inspiration.

  12. I am totally blown away by this technique! It is absolutely stunning in its simplicity. I was really intrigued by the leaves being a gray shade. I’d never have thought of it, but it is an amazing effect, especially with the gray frame, and even though the leaves are painted too, it lets the flower take center stage. Thank you for introducing her to me. It’s just possible that this is something I can do, and will be a good project to try on the Strathmore w/c cards I found on clearance today!!!!

  13. Thank you and Marika so much for the video! I am also a big fan of her. I like this technique, it is a less intimidating watercolor. I’ll give it a try!
