Lasting Hearts Card Drive + Giveaway

Hello! I am here today to ask you for your help. There is an amazing cause that could use some loving, handmade cards and I hope you will consider participating. A great way to “share handmade kindness” with people who need it most.

To explain what we need, I want to introduce you to my friend, Kimberly. Kimberly is a funny, bubbly, happy, kind soul who works with many of my other favorite people at Hero Arts. I am going to share her words here… and then will share what we can do to help:

Lasting Hearts is here to help comfort mothers who have lost a piece of their heart. Losing a child, whether in pregnancy or older, can be one of the hardest pains a parent can endure. We would like to raise awareness and show other mothers that they are not alone, that they are stronger than they realize, and that there are people out there who care dearly. Hopefully, our story will move others to do just that.

Just 9 months after giving birth to our first child, we were surprised and overjoyed to be welcoming another one on the way. We did what all parents with a growing family would do: told our close friends and family, looked into buying a larger home, and started planning for another life-changing event. We were elated to be bringing our sweet daughter another brother or sister.

Our joy soon to turned to heartache. We found out at our first ultrasound that we were set to have twins, however one of our precious babies had passed early on in the pregnancy. With heavy hearts, we tried to stay positive and prayed for the surviving twin to be a healthy baby. In our second ultrasound we were relieved and comforted by our baby’s precious heartbeat and left the doctor’s office feeling hopeful. Sadly, our fears became reality in our third ultrasound. After examining the ultrasound, our tech turns to us and asks, “Did you say you heard your baby’s heartbeat”? Instantly, we lost a piece of our hearts. Our lives were forever changed after losing not one but two of our babies in the same pregnancy.

We sat in the examination room, completely devastated and broken, waiting for our doctor. She comes in and does her best to console us but nothing she says could ease the pain. Her clinical response of “25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage” or “there was nothing you could’ve done to prevent this” just fell on deaf ears. None of it satisfied the two questions that kept running through our heads – “How could this happen?” and “why did this happen?” As amazing of an OBGYN as she is, she just wasn’t equipped to comfort 2 people whose world had been turned upside down. The conversation continues to how best to proceed in removing the fetuses, a conversation that’s cold in stark contrast to how we imagined delivering our precious children. We were absolutely heartbroken.

We kept our loss private for some time, not knowing how to express our grief and slightly afraid of the stigma that comes with miscarriages. It was too painful to speak of and too agonizing to share. One of the first people I reached out to was my dear friend, Amy, who had lost her son towards the end of her pregnancy and who knew the heartache all too well. I looked to her for her strength and for guidance on how she’s been able to continue to be a great mom to her young daughter after losing her infant son. A couple of days later I received a book from Amy, “You are the Mother of all Mothers” by Angela Miller. After only reading a few pages, I finally let myself accept for the first time that what happened to us was not my fault and that I did have the strength to continue to be a better mom and wife. The book’s encouraging message is conveyed in a way that is thoughtful, uplifting, compassionate and relatable.

With a newfound strength, I brought this book to our OBGYN and asked her if she’d be open to distributing these to patients who had miscarried if we provided them. She agreed without any hesitation. The author, Angela Miller, has graciously agreed to offer 40% off the list price so that we may help those who are in the disheartening situation we were once in. I can’t help but think of the mothers who don’t have support, don’t know where to turn, or just need to know that “No one else could carry this unrelenting burden as courageously. It is the heaviest, most torturous burden there is”.

In summary, Kimberly is hoping to have copies of this helpful book along with handmade cards available for doctors to give to parents who lose their babies. What an amazing idea! And we can help.

So there are TWO ways you can help. You can do one or both – whatever you are comfortable with. You can donate money and/or cards.

DONATION

If you are interested in donating money, you can head HERE. This money will 100% be used to purchase “You are the Mother of all Mothers” books by Angela Miller to give to parents who have just experienced the loss of a child via miscarriage. The price of each book is $12 but any amount helps.

CARD DRIVE

Kimberly also plans to include a handmade card from a caring stranger with each book. And I thought we could help!

If you are interesting in creating a card to be given to these parents when they get a book, here is the info. It is simple:

  • You can send as many cards as you would like.
  • Please use a sentiment such as: thinking of you, in my prayers, in my thoughts, sending hugs, sorry for your loss.
  • For the inside of the card, you can either leave it blank or hand-write a simple message. Not much – just simple and kind. The message can be something listed above, along with your first name and hometown. (Such as: “Sending lots of prayers from Jennifer in Cincinnati.”)
  • Please send cards in unsealed envelopes to:
          Lasting Hearts Card Drive
          2892 N Bellflower Blvd Ste 216
          Long Beach Ca 90815
  • Include a post-it note on the card(s) with your name and email address so you can be eligible for a prize!
  • If you would like to include a donation via mail, you are welcome to but not required to.

Creating cards is something we can do easily and a great way to share kindness. And you may win a prize!

GIVEAWAY

Anyone who sends in cards before 2/29/16 for the Lasting Hearts Card Drive will be eligible to win a prize of $100 of Hero Arts products! Just be sure to put your email address and name on a post-it when you send in your card(s). (International folks are welcome. One winner will be picked.)

PRAYERS SET

There is one more way you can help! 25% of the profits of this Prayers stamp and die set will be donated to the Lasting Hearts efforts:

This prayers set was a collaboration between Simon Says Stamp and Hero Arts in September, but was for a limited time only. Due to high demand, they are bringing it back and giving 25% to the cause. I LOVE this. (And thanks to Kimberly, Hero Arts and Simon Says Stamp for going along with my crazy idea! You are remarkable.)

You can see this set in action HERE.

THANK YOU!

Kimberly and I would like to thank to Simon Says Stamp, Hero Arts, Amy Jacobson, Angela Miller, Hernan Sierra, and all of the OBGYNs who have agreed to participate… and especially to all of you for caring enough to help!

What a wonderful cause. I, too, suffered a miscarriage and was devastated. People don’t know what to say and you feel like it was something you might have done. I know this effort will help comfort all the women who have gone through this or will. God bless this effort. Stay blessed!

As the mom who lost a child it is so hard. I lost her to Breast Cancer 4 years ago but time hasn’t healed the pain. I got to see the amazing woman she became. I can’t imagine losing a baby as you must have the thoughts of what that child could have become.

Wow! This is an amazing way to reach out! Thank you for a chance to be involved! I’m going to try my hardest to send a few cards in…life is pretty hectic right now. God bless you, Jennifer, for attempting to make the world a little easier for those having a hard time. You make the world a better place!

  4. Pam C says:

What a wonderful cause Jennifer!!!!! Please count me in on making cards. I’ve already asked for the help of my 3 other sisters that are not at all scrapbookers but are willing to help me make cards for this wonderful cause. It’s wonderful to think that these people would be getting a handmade card from a total stranger but to know that there are people out there thinking about them and their loved ones!! To Kimberly and her family my heart goes out to them but it’s great to see that such horrible loss is or will make a difference in others who have had to go through what she went through. I’m not a devoted catholic but truly believe that God does things for a reason and to see how Kimberly made this beautiful cause based on her experience is wonderful! You Jennifer and Kimberly are amazing!!!!!

I appreciate you finding “causes” that we can support. It means a lot to be able to give back and knowing a good place to give is important. Not only are your videos helpful but your heart provides so much to so many. Thank you Jennifer!

This is such a great idea. I myself just had a miscarriage back in September. This was to be our first child. We were devastated when we went to our first ultrasound and the doctor asked “Are you sure your that far along?” When I responded yes she replied “I don’t hear a heartbeat, you may have had a miscarriage”. I broke down immediately. How can this happen? I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs, I have an occasional glass of wine (before I knew I was pregnant). Nothing the doctor said could comfort my husband and I. It really was like a piece of us just died. It would have meant a lot to leave that cold room with a nice card letting us know that we are not alone in this, or some sort of book to reassure us that we should keep on trying and not give up. We are keeping our heads up and hoping 2016 may bring us a little bundle of joy. All we know is it is in the Lord’s hands. I will definitely be participating in this!

Wow! How wonderful to come up with such a lovely idea to help others while dealing with your own pain. It is truly a wonderful gesture and i hope to be able to help out with some cards. This would have meant a lot to me when I too suffered a miscarriage at four months along many years ago. There was no help or anywhere to turn for support, a truly sad and alone time. This is just wonderful . Truly sorry for Amy’s loss! Virtual hugs sent your way!

  10. terrie rodrigue says:

So sad to read the story about the miscarriage …I myself had one and I din’t have the support of anyone at that time…
I will make the cards and mail them for this cause…
My heart breaks for this family….sending love and hugs to them…
    Thanks for sharing it…

How wonderful. I’m all in! My son and his wife had 3 pregnancies before they carried one full term but I’m a happy grandmother to a healthy, beautiful little girl. They suffered with each loss and remembrance like this would have been nice for them. Thank you for doing this and for letting us know about it.

  13. Tiffanie says:

Wow.. thank you so much for sharing this, I am in tears. I really need to set some time aside to participate. January 29th will be 17 years since I had a D&E for IUFD of my only baby. Well meaning people would say all the wrong things and I felt so very alone. This is such a beautiful cause.

  14. Marybeth says:

This is such a wonderful project. When I lost my babies so many long years ago, there was no information on coping with this. A book and card would have been a godsend. Will start working on cards.

  25. Such a good cause. I have never been through this but I know it would be devastating. Thanks for letting me contribute.

  26. Jill says:

My heart breaks for Kimberly and so many others, including my own friends and family who’s hearts will never be the same. I ache for parents that lose a child. I had to get some handmade love made straightaway, as I think this is an amazing thought. I hope to send many and I hope lots of cards are collected and many people feel the love. Especially in their time of greatest need. Thank you for sharing and spreading the word, Jennifer.

  27. Ellabug says:

Great idea !!! Can’t wait to get started.

  28. Debs says:

This is an amazing project and although it won’t change what happened it will change the mother’s life, by helping her to heal. Kudos to you all.

  29. Excellent idea! I too, had a miscarriage in between my two daughters births. It was more than 25 years ago but I remember the feeling still. I’ll be sending cards!

  30. hopemitchell says:

There can be such a disconnect between a wonderful OB/GYN and a patient at a time like this. A book written by someone who has experienced such a painful loss along with cards from “sisters in love and compassion” should be that “balm in Gilead”.. I am going to participate.

  31. What an amazing cause, I will be sending my card soon! Thanks for the meaningful card drive and links!

  32. This makes my heart sing to see someone take the initiative to do what Kimberly is doing. I have lost 4 babies so this is near and dear to my heart. It’s a lifetime of heartache, but to know someone is trying to make our heart feel better.. Makes me smile. Prayers to all Mom’s who have lost babies.. May you know that you are not alone.. Thank you Jennifer for sharing this so that we can participate.

  33. Jennifer this is such a worthy cause. I miscarried my first child at 16 weeks, it was such a devastating blow. I still remember the grief I felt and the fear that I might not ever have a child. I did have that change again about 6 months after and had a healthy baby boy (now 21). Grief over the loss of a baby, miscarriage or other, is very real. I will do what I can to support the Lasting Hearts Card Drive. Thank you for doing this. 🙂

  34. Thank you Jennifer for providing another opportunity for me to give from my heart to a cause that is very personal to me. It has been 24 years now but I can still remember that day that I was in my doctor’s office and he told me the awful news about my pregnancy. I already had 2 successful pregnancies and NEVER thought this would happen to me. Devastating. But God is faithful and our son was born almost 22 years ago. There is hope and it will be nice to send words of encouragement to women after they’ve suffered a miscarriage.

  35. Kathy M says:

    Thanks for sharing. Great cards

  36. Sue Stenning says:

What a lovely idea. My sister lost her baby also and the bereavement is heart breaking. I will be contributing. Many thanks Jennifer for setting up this card challenge along with Simon says stamps, the more it is talked about I hope will make it easier for people to share their experiences.

  37. Gwen says:

Thank you Jennifer & Kimberly for raising awareness to this worthy cause! It is sadly an all too common occurrence but rarely talked about. I’ve known a lot of women including my mom, sister, cousin & friends who had gone through this awful experience. It is great to be able to get an opportunity to create handmade cards to not necessarily take their pain away but perhaps give these women some comfort even if it is for a moment.

  38. Lisa K says:

Having lived through this, it brings tears to my heart to read of someone else dealing with the loss. Thank you for sharing this drive with your readers.

  39. danemaet says:

Thank you so so much for this wonderful and loving card drive! I just ordered the Prayers stamp and die set and plan on participating in this worthy cause. Just love your techniques, Jennifer, and thanks to you and Kimberly for doing this. May God comfort you in your unspeakable loss, Kimberly. Out of that you are being a tremendous blessing.

  40. Barb says:

Wonderful caring idea. Do you want envelopes with the cards too ?

  41. Heather (mtl) says:

I understand all too well. It was long ago, back when no one really talked about anything private and I was devastated. I wanted children. Then I found out I had endometriosis which is a common reason for miscarriages. Several surgeries later (and the last one resulting in stage 4 tumours that also went through my colon), I still was not able to have children. I feel that hole in my heart still. Few people know to this day and, truth be told, this is the first time I’ve actually written these words down.

  42. Debbie says:

I have a close friend who recently lost her baby boy one day before she was scheduled for a c-section. Now as if that heartache wasn’t enough for one momma to bear, turned out her placenta was filled with cancer and babe couldn’t survive. Now she is going through chemo to rid herself of the cancer that killed her precious little one.
I am so thankful to have seen this, and would like to purchase this book for her, hoping I can find it in Canada. I would also like to send some cards for this amazing cause! Love and prayers to all who have lost! I can’t imagine this pain! ??

  43. Geri S. says:

Leave it to Jennifer to come up with another wonderful cause! Wish I had access to something like this as I’ve been pregnant 6 times but have only 2 children living. I’ll get started on some cards. God Bless the women!

  44. Marcia johnson says:

Thank you so much Jennifer for sharing this cause. I am excited to make some cards to send. Prayers to all who are instrumental in this wonderful idea!

  45. Holly says:

How long is this campaign going? My moms group does a charity of the quarter, and this is right up our alley.

    1. it will continue with no end in plans

  46. Verna Angerhofer says:

Having never experienced the loss of a child, I cannot begin to fathom what these mothers go through but if my making some cards helps ease their pain then I will certainly do so. I am donating ten cards as well as a monetary donation.

  47. Cindy Coutts says:

I’ve buried a baby. It’s horrific. I would like to bring to everybody’s attention the tragic loss of Lea Lawson’s baby in late pregnancy that she is still struggling with. Her blog is at lealawsoncreates.com. She’s a wonderful, Christian woman who has contributed so much to this industry and I’m extremely saddened to see that she has been forgotten about, has never been mentioned during any card drive, and that only certain people seem to be recognized. All parents and babies matter who have been lost. Lea chronicles her innermost thoughts, feelings and spiritual struggles as she continues to cope with the tragic loss of her daughter after several miscarriages prior to losing Ellie.

    1. this isn’t about recognizing certain people and not others, but rather just friends chatting and coming together for a cause. makes me sad that so many have gone through this. i have reached out to lea to see if she wants to join our efforts!

  48. Julie says:

I too, lost a child at 15 weeks, devastating, it was in the early 90’s and the situation was ignored because no one knew what to say. Your friend is brave to share her experience with your readers, I am sending her hugs and will certainly make a contribution and some cards. I am also going to suggest this to our local hospital to distribute these books….what an AWESOME idea!

  49. HeatherM says:

Such a great cause! My sister and best friend friend lost babies recently. My sister’s was the day before she was due. It’s been so hard for both of them. Hugs, cards, support and this book will help so many moms, dads and families!!

    Thank you!
