Video: Adding Dimension to Cards + GIVEAWAY

Hi there. Today’s video is a bit different than my other videos. It’s more like a crafty service announcement. 🙂 I’ve received lots of questions about why I use craft foam instead of foam tape for adding dimension to my cards. Here’s why…

Over the year, I have been noticing that cards sent through the mail with lots of foam tape pieces don’t hold up well. So the engineer in me wanted to do a bit of research. I sent two cards to myself (the mail lady thought I was a bit crazy). One card had a panel with foam tape strips behind it and the other with craft foam. The card using the craft foam for dimension held up much better in the mail. The one using foam tape was bent and had creases. Proof! So for large panels, I use fun foam.

When I purchase my fun/craft foam, I cut it into pieces slightly smaller than a standard note card so they’re ready to go. When adhering the fun foam to a card, I use a tape runner (and also squirt some Multi Matte Medium with a fine nozzle under the corners), Stick-It or Scor-Tape (aka Be Creative Tape).  There is adhesive backed fun foam on the market, but I have found that it doesn’t always die-cut well.

Fun foam can also be used with your dies. They make great embellishments and can even be heated with a heat gun to be made smaller. I usually use THIS white foam but I have found THIS multi-color pack that I like as well. The colors in it are actually pretty!

I do still use my big roll of foam adhesive tape for adding small pieces. I really like it and it lasts forever.

I hope this gives you a better explanation of why I use craft foam for dimension of large pieces on my cards. I put a lot of time and love into my cards and I want to make sure they get to the recipient in good shape!

  1. My go to adhesives are the Tombo MONO Permanent Adhesive runner and the Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive. I also still use my ATG runner but use the Tombo the most since they can go anywhere with me. {Yes I have more than one Tombo runner {4}. lol.}
I use the fun/craft foam behind larger pieces or die cuts and Scotch foam tape for everything else.
Thanks for the chance to win some goodies.
    Crafty hugs,

  2. I love the foam tape and white fun foam. I also love all your videos. You
are top of my subscriptions and am excited when you post new ones. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and fun ideas.

  3. Love all the info on the video. My favorite adhesive is Multi matte medium and my ATG gun. Thanks for the opportunity to win

  4. I can’t believe I stumbled on your blog this weekend and have been glued to my pc reading and watching everything. Love it all and am learning so much. I remember you from my CK and Simple Scrapbook magazines. I have tried sooo many adhesives and always return to EK Success Herma Dotto. Love that it is 49′. But now, reading this I may have to try yet another.

  5. I have to say that for regular sheets of paper, I quite like glue sticks. For anything thicker though, I switch to double-sided tape on a roll as it makes things quicker.

  6. I love dimensional cards, I have never tried the full panel of EVA underneath, most of my cards are hand delivered. thanks for the tip about the MMM glue and the video.
    Have a wonderful day!

  7. Tombo Mono adhesives are my favorite. Or the orange super sticky tape stuff lol. Yeah I am good at names, not.

  8. I haven’t a favourite adhesive. Sometimes I use this one and sometimes I use this one but I like dry adhesiv more than wet
    °^-^°

  9. I like using the foam roll of tape but I did make a card using some fun foam and it made the card so much better.

  10. My favorite adhesive is tombo mono and the foam tape by scotch. I’m just getting started so I’m not sure about other types. I use a bottle craft glue on occasion and for paper I have also used rubber cement as it keeps the paper smooth. Learned that from a fellow quilter.
Love the craft foam idea I use the foam tape a lot and never mailed a card to myself to see how it holds up. I wonder if mailing the craft foam is regular postage ? I had to add extra postage when I sent Christmas cards using foam tape.
I’d like to try a few other glue type adhesives and the special tape you use, particularly the bottles that aren’t known as an adhesive (?)
Thanks for great videos always love to see what’s new!

  11. my default adhesive is Tombo MONO Permanent Adhesive runner but If I really want something to stay put I will run it through the Xyron. Your recommendation about Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive has changed the way I adhere stuff. Thanks for that.

  12. It depends on what I need the adhesive for. Tombo Mono Multi or red lined double sided adhesive tape… or a glue stick or…..

  13. My favourite depends on what i am doing but i would have to say glossy accents (have yet to try out multi matte medium) as it sticks down all my embellishments and love the shine it gives as well 🙂

  14. Thank you for the great tips!!! I will be trying this. My go to adhesive is the ATG runner.
    Thank you:))

  15. I have been struggling to find an adhesive I am in love with. I use a lot of wet adhesive, but think I should be trying the 3M tape. Thanks for the great info and testing of the foam sheets. It’s a great idea. One that I for sure will try.

  16. I love my ATG tape gun! I also use double sided foam tape and a Quickie glue pen for small details. I have begun using the craft foam since watching your videos. What a great idea!

  17. One of my favorite adhesives is from the Xyron machine (9″ Creative Station). I can make stickers from any sheet of paper, printed or not. It also does laminate/adhesive and laminate/magnet as well as repositionable adhesive.

  18. I have used Scotch foam mounting tape for a LONG time!!! I had no idea it came in that ginormous roll!!! I also use the Scotch ATG gun. And that’s about it when it comes to adhesive 😉

  19. I love the ideas you shared in the video I really love the shrinking idea thanks for sharing your creative ideas

  20. I’ve been trying a heap of different adhesives lately, but I always find myself coming back to my $2 Kmart (Australia) glue runner from the stationary/office supply department. It’s super sticky, super cheap and the rolls are about a metre longer than the more expensive brands – funnily enough, including tape runners found in Kmart’s craft department! They’re also compact so I stock up on a heap of them whenever I’m in Kmart as they’re easy to store!

  21. I love my ATG. I am also liking the quick dry in my fine line bottle. I have the big roll of foam tape but after watching your video I will have to look into some fun foam!

  22. Like you I love the 3M roll for adhering embellishments. For the everyday, I’m a Tomboy mono dots lover! People try to convert me to a larger format roller, but I like the mobility of the tombow tape runner.
Thanks Jennifer for the “public service”. I’ll have to try shrinking the foam. What fun 🙂

  23. I ordered some craft foam today! I hope this will make it much easier to make shaker cards! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

  24. First, I just want to say I love your videos. You have given me so many great ideas. Thank you! My favorite adhesive is the scotch brand foam mounting tape but I also use my Scotch Advanced Tape Glider all the time.

  25. my favorite adhesive is the foam tape roll! love that I can cut it out to any size. and it lasts forever!

  26. My favorite is the tombow tape runner that does the dots, like you use. Thanks for the chance to win!

  27. Thanks for those helpful tips. I’m trying to track down some white craft foam locally but all I’ve been able to find is cheap & nasty glittery stuff. It must be time for a SimonSaysStamp order! My fav adhesive is my Tombo mono adhesive runner – so reliable & convenient. I use a lot of double sided tape too.

  28. Hi! Love the tip concerning craft foam versus Scotch double sided adhesive foam tape (which is my fav go to for dimensional projects

  29. I love your organization video’s. I believe my adhesive I grab first is a tape runner just because it is so quick.

  30. I use small glue runners, usually Ad tech because they are easier for me to handle than the big ones. I teach card making to seniors and they like the small ones too.
I also use Tombo liquid glue because I’ve never had the nozzles clog up.
