Video: Adding Dimension to Cards + GIVEAWAY

Hi there. Today’s video is a bit different than my other videos. It’s more like a crafty service announcement. 🙂 I’ve received lots of questions about why I use craft foam instead of foam tape for adding dimension to my cards. Here’s why…

Over the year, I have been noticing that cards sent through the mail with lots of foam tape pieces don’t hold up well. So the engineer in me wanted to do a bit of research. I sent two cards to myself (the mail lady thought I was a bit crazy). One card had a panel with foam tape strips behind it and the other with craft foam. The card using the craft foam for dimension held up much better in the mail. The one using foam tape was bent and had creases. Proof! So for large panels, I use fun foam.

When I purchase my fun/craft foam, I cut it into pieces slightly smaller than a standard note card so they’re ready to go. When adhering the fun foam to a card, I use a tape runner (and also squirt some Multi Matte Medium with a fine nozzle under the corners), Stick-It or Scor-Tape (aka Be Creative Tape).  There is adhesive backed fun foam on the market, but I have found that it doesn’t always die-cut well.

Fun foam can also be used with your dies. They make great embellishments and can even be heated with a heat gun to be made smaller. I usually use THIS white foam but I have found THIS multi-color pack that I like as well. The colors in it are actually pretty!

I do still use my big roll of foam adhesive tape for adding small pieces. I really like it and it lasts forever.

I hope this gives you a better explanation of why I use craft foam for dimension of large pieces on my cards. I put a lot of time and love into my cards and I want to make sure they get to the recipient in good shape!

  1. Oh my gosh – I’ve been using craft foam for a while, but I had no idea you could shrink it. How cool! Thanks Jennifer! As for my favorite adhesive… I’d have to say my ATG tape gun. Best crafty investment I ever made – I just really feel like I get the most adhesive for the money. (But for a liquid, I’m all for the Ranger Multi Medium Matte – awesome stuff!)

  2. Thanks for this video. Your videos are always so informative. I use so many adhesives, it just all depends on what I’m doing at the time. I usually use a Tombow tape runner for most things and the mono mutli liquid for others. I love the 3m 3d foam tape, too. Thanks for the chance to win!

  3. Just today I found you on interest,,,,where have I been? I’ve been on your site for over an hour, just admiring all of your beautiful work and your videos. You’ve got me hooked! and a contest to boot!!! What fun. I would never have thought about using craft foam to add dimension, and I have so much of it! Thanks for the heads up!! You’ve got another follower..

  4. I’m still really hooked on my ATG adhesive – holds great & great value for the money! Matte multi medium is my favorite liquid – can’t beat that matte finish! Great info in this video – really useful!

  5. On my first reply it should read “I found you on Pinterest” and then I forget to tell you my favorite type of adhesive, I use the 3M big yellow tape dispenser AG700?? It lasts and lasts when I’m using the tape, so that is probably my favorite type of adhesive

  6. My favorite adhesive depends on what I am doing. I love my ATG gun and that tape and I love the Tombow adhesives.

  7. Love the raised look of the card stock with foam below it
    Great idea

My favorite Adhesive is the Tombow permanent tape runner

  8. I haven’t seen craft foam or foam tape here in Brittany but I do know what they are! I never knew that craft foam shrank either! What fun! brilliant tips and techniques, many thanks!

  9. Love this video! Craft foam is now on the shopping list for my next trip to the craft store! I love glossy accents or matte medium for a liquid adhesive and I have also recently fallen in love with score tape too. Thanks for the chance to win!

  10. I like taking my fun foam, and putting the stick it on both sides. I take off the top adhesive layer and add card stock. Then I run it through the die cut machine, and I have paper on top of the foam ready to stick down on a card base. Thanks for this and all your videos

  11. My favorite adhesive would have to be score tape. But, I also like to use Tombow Multi Mono liquid adhesive and multi-medium matte. Thanks for the chance to win that great giveaway! 🙂

  12. I have to say the ATG tape and Tombow are the best adhesives I use. I love watching your videos Jennifer! They are a great source of inspiration. Looking forward to more!!

  13. Thank you so much for this useful information! My favorite adhesive is Staz-on glue. The dry time is perfect! I would love to try out the craft foam! Thanks so much for teaching us all these cool tips! <3

  14. I would have to say that my favorite adhesive is my scrapbook tape–X-PressIt. It comes in several widths and can be removed without messing up your pages.

  15. My favorite right now is score tape. I use some time the Gluc Glider Pro and pentel Roll and glue liquid adhesive. Thanks for all your videos

  16. My favorite adhesive has been scotch permanent adhesive roller. However, I have just ordered the Tombow stamp runner after watching some videos where it has been used; love the idea that you can ‘stamp’ a small spot rather instead of always have to run a line. Love the foam tape, but I don’t use it as often, mainly due to the cost and my modest budget.

  17. I just started using an ATG gun and I love it. The adhesive is so much stronger than other tape adhesives. I’ve never used fun foam nor craft foam but I’ll definitely try it. I have used the score tape and like it too.

  18. I never tried craft foam and I do not have the original foam tape roll by scoth because I can not find here in Sweden..I would like to try both and see the differences.. Thanks for the chance to win!!

  19. I use the Scotch Tape Runner, but also like the small Scrapbook Adhesives runners and Scor-Pal tape.

  20. I really appreciate your explanations along with the rationale as to why you choose to do something. For example, actually mailing the cards to yourself! Craft foam will be my choice now.

    Thanks

  21. My fav glue is Zig 2way glue pen. For dimension I use foam squares or adhere images to a piece of paper and cut it put.

  22. Tombo adhesive tape, and just like you, Jennifer, the foam tape from Scotch. I buy a huge size one! 🙂

  23. Thanks for your Videos, I always like to learn and do it later myself. I use a lot of different adhesive, most of all a taperunner and rolls of foamtape. Greetings from Vienna, Ernestine

  24. Thanks so much for sharing the tip of placing the foam to support cards during mailing. Such a clever idea!!!

  25. Thank you for this informative video. I guess I did not know that the cards get crinkly like that in the mail. I send a lot of cards and I love dimension. I sometimes will put them into the special envelopes with padding (especially for my grand kids cause those cards are usually really thick). I am going to give this fun foam a try. And I need to find that Stick It sheet……wondering how expensive it is. I have found that those can be pricey. Oh, and my favorite adhesive is Tear-ific Tape by Sparkle N Sprinkle. It is just like other double sided tapes by other manufacturers. I have converted many friends to this tape in lieu of tape runners.

  26. My favorite adhesive is Scor-Tape, though I wish the manufacturer would print measurement lines on the backing paper–it would make it easier to cut the exact length needed.

  27. My favorite adhesive are the repositionable dots (E-Z Dots) because I change my mind too often when working on a photo album layout. I also like Scor-Tape when I want a double sided tape.

  28. My most used adhesive is my ATG tape gun since it’s cost effective, but I think I like my Tombow permanent adhesive runner the best

  29. I recently purchased Teresa Collins tape runner because of the size. My ATG gun was not working well and after CT surgery on my dominant hand, I had to look for something easier to use. I like it just fine. I get the refills with Michaels 50% off coupons. I also use a lot of Scor-tape and Foam tape because it tears easily- don’t have to use scissors! And I can’t forget the Martha Stewart glue pens. They are awesome. Never clogs. Really good, and very inexpensive. (What something from Martha is inexpensive) Yes. TFS. I love your videos.

  30. Adhesives are very persnickety! I usually have to try at least twice to get things to stick unless it’s paper to paper.
