Video: Shaker Card

Hi there! I get a lot of requests for shaker cards. Although, they really aren’t my thing and I haven’t done one in ages, I decided to give one a try by incorporating it into a stamped image. It was fun!

When I saw the stamp set in the new Studio Calico Sandlot Card Kit, I instantly knew I needed to turn that adorable gumball machine into a shaker card. (I mean COME ON… isn’t that stamp the cutest?! Love.) After a bit of creative heat embossing with red, liquid platinum and sparkle embossing powder, I cut out the opening of the machine out with a craft knife. For the “glass” on the shaker, I used a piece of scrap acetate. Small pieces of foam tape are perfect to form the walls of the shaker area… which I then filled in with Studio Calico sequins.

OTHER SHAKER CARDS

I looked around for some other good shaker card tutorials. Here are a couple I found that may be help to you:

  • Laura Sterckx – This video shows how to do a shaker card using dies. Simple and fabulous.
  • Lawn Fawn – This video from Lawn Fawn shows how you can use “fun foam” (instead of foam tape) for adding dimension around a shaker window.

OTHER GREAT PRODUCTS

The stamp I used above is part of the newest Studio Calico Card Kit. Check out these other great products they recently released. The first is a “teacher” stamp and die combo. (That crayon stamp image? Adorable. And the teacher die will get used a lot here.) The “you’re pretty amazing” die is sitting on my table and am so excited to use it. Finally, the “awesome” stamp and die combo just makes me giddy. So great to use on cards for kids and friends. (Click on each for a closer look.)

Enjoy!

  1. Wow! Is there anything you can’t do? You’re pretty amazing with your creative talent. I aspire to do as well as you. Thanks so much for teaching me along with everyone else.

  2. What can I say…Awesome card once again. It amazes me everytime I watch your videos, how you come up with these ideas.
I was wondering if you could let me know about the storage container that you use for your sequin storage. That is really great and I would like to order some. thank you once again.

  3. FUN & FABULOUS card Jennifer!!!
THANK YOU for making this shaking and showing us how to create them – I look forward to making some now 🙂

  4. I would never have thought of using sequins for the gum/candy, but I think it is so darn cute! Who wouldn’t smile if they received this card? Beautiful bright red. I don’t think I’ve ever made a shaker card. Maybe its time to give it a try…

  5. I love this stamp set! Wish it was sold without the kit. Wonderful idea with the shaker card. Thanks for another great video. Also, I really enjoyed seeing you on CreativeLive. It was a great two days packed with so much information. Loved that it was free too!

  6. Love shaker cards and yours is so sweet.
I enjoy watching your video’s so thank U 4 taking the time in making them.
    Enjoy your day

  7. I don’t know if the sizes would match up but I imagine this design would work well with the treat cups Stampin Up used to sell…or a similar ‘blister pack’ style of packaging.

  8. Hello Jennifer, a very SWEET card! I notice you have a similar problem I’ve encountered with sequin shaker boxes–sometimes the sequins stick to the sides of the foam tape, and aren’t free to move around. I’ve tried tapping the inside edge of the tape with my embossing powder tool, to neutralize some of the stickiness, before adding the sequins, and removing the backing from the tape. It helps. Happy summer!

  9. Love the video and idea of shaker cards! I too would like to know where you got the storage containers for the sequins. Thanks for sharing and inspiring!

  10. I just wanted to say thanks for continuously making videos. I enjoy watching while on my lunchbreak, gives me something fun and crafty to think of when I’m at work away from all my supplies!

  11. I love shaker cards and this was a great video with each step explained in detail. I have one hint for you: before adding the sequins/beads/etc. wipe the acetate with a dryer sheet to eliminate the static cling. Happy shaking!

  12. I don’t do a lot of shaker cards either, the filling tends to stick to the tape. I like the idea of using a stamp as you did. The bubble gum machine is really cute – I’ll have to get it. Thank you very much for all these videos you do. I’ve learned a lot from you, and maybe more importantly, you’ve given me reassurance that I do know what I’m doing!

  13. Hi Jennifer, I enjoy how detailed you are when using embossing powder. You think out of the box and I love that. That’s what makes you stand out from everyone else. That’s what makes Me watch all your tutorials and reviews. I’m so glad that I came to your blog. I enjoy being one of your subscribers/fans. Great work as always. : – )
