Video: Distress Ink Watercolor + Embossing Folders… and GIVEAWAY

Hi! Today’s video shows how to combine embossing folders and watercolor (via Distress Inks) for soft, textured backgrounds. And! I am giving away THREE sets of Mini Distress Ink Pads

[All supplies are linked in the thumbnails at the end of this post. Click HERE to watch on YouTube.]

A couple days ago, I shared a technique where I applied ink to the inside of an embossing folder. (Click HERE to see the video.) Today, I am back with a spin on this technique. This technique results in a watercolor effect with lots of texture.

I started by applying Distress Ink to the inside of an embossing folder. I decided to use the Mini Distress Ink pads (more on these below) because I could directly apply many colors to a small area. I then misted the inked area with water – 10 to 12 times. After putting watercolor paper inside, I ran it through my die cut machine. The results? A watercolor look with texture…

This next example uses the same Tim Holtz Lattice embossing folder that I used above, but I inked the other side of the embossing folder…

By the way, for these cards, I used Distress Ink + water for a watercolor effect. You could instead apply watercolor directly to the inside of a folder for a similar look. You could also try Gelatos + water, other inks + water, etc.

I really am loving the Tim Holtz embossing folders because of the small patterns. Check out this one – the Trellis – it is so cool with this technique…

For this next example, I did something a bit different. I first used the embossing folder on plain watercolor paper. Then I used my Mini Ink Blending Tool and Distress Ink over the embossed area… then misted it generously with water. This gives a more “controlled” look. (Or, as I prefer to say… “less artsy fartsy.” Hee.)

I also used a Tim Holtz Diffuser on this so that I could have an un-embossed area on the card. Worked great!

And finally, a look at the final cards. I once again kept them very simple since the backgrounds have so much to offer. For the banner die cuts, I used the Avery Elle Dotted Dies. (Really liking the embossed dots it gives around the banner.) The sentiments include “oh happy day” and “all smiles” (from the Mama Elephant Bountiful Blessings set), “miss you” (from the Mama Elephant In My Hearts set), and “birthday wishes” (from the Avery Elle Sending You set). I used Liquid Platinum embossing powders on all of these… and on the mini die cut hearts and stars.

I tell ya… there is no ink as versatile as Distress Ink. Love it!
