2013 Caring Hearts Card Drive

Hello! It is time for us to put our love for cardmaking to good use once again. It’s a new card drive!

Holiday time is approaching and we are back for the 4th year for our annual Caring Hearts Card Drive to collect holiday cards for the elderly that live in nursing homes. This year, I am again teaming with my dear friend Vera Yates and we are hoping that we can bring holiday cheer to as many nursing homes as possible.

We have a couple ladies helping us in collecting the cards. Tina Schrof is working with Jennifer in collecting the cards. And we want to support the nursing homes that are located in Canada as well, so, we have Anita Recksiedler helping out for our Canada joint venture. Since international shipping is expensive, those of you in Canada can mail your cards to Anita and she’ll distribute them to nursing homes.

I hope you will join us to reach as many nursing homes as possible and continue to spread more joy.

A few important details:

  • This card drive will be going on till November 28, 2013. We need to receive your card by November 28, 2013 so be sure to mail them a bit before.
  • Please make the cards for Christmas or Holiday Wishes. Anyone can send a card – your children, church group, scout troops, etc.
  • All cards need to have a message in it (it can be stamped or hand written).
  • Please sign your name and where you are from.
  • Please include an envelope for each card and please don’t seal the envelope.
  • Please stick to just cards (all size welcome)
  • And please don’t use any pins (safety reasons).
  • In each package, PLEASE include THIS SUBMISSION FORM.  This helps us in keeping track for prizes! For each card you send, you will get a chance.  So the more cards you send, the better your chances.
  • You can mail the cards to any of these addresses:

  1. Hi Jennifer,

I have really enjoyed being a part of this card drive and look forward to participating again this year! I simply have one question?, Is there a specific number of cards to send? For some reason I’ve forgotten, but I thought it was something like five or ten — or maybe any amount?

Thanks to you, Vera, Tina and Anita for hosting this sweet event!

  2. I think this is a great project but I am going to support it indirectly by sending cards to those I know to be in nursing or retirement homes locally. I know many who are from our church family and my daughter is Human Resources Director for a facility, where my Dad once lived and I met many there. If I have time to make more for this drive, I will do so. It’s a wonderful idea and those who receive the cards are always so happy to be remembered by someone, because often they are not!

  3. I think I’m going to participate for my first time ever this year!! just a question, if I send 10 cards in a package, do I put 10 submission forms in the package?

  5. Hi Jennifer, I just want to say how awesome you are for doing this card drive. I’m literally tearing up right now (oh crap, now I’m actually crying, lol) because my dad spent several weeks in a nursing/rehabilitation home last summer. He was able to come live with me and my husband for his final four days before he passed away.

I am definitely contributing to sending cards to help this cause. Many individuals in nursing homes DO have family visit very regularly; but in some situations, these individuals are almost forgotten by their families or have no family members left. In those cases, it is up to the nursing staff, clergy, and other volunteers to quite literally give these nursing patients a reason to live.

So thank you very much for creating this card drive.

  6. I have never done one of these things and its sounds like fun! One question – you indicate to sign your name and where you are from – in the card right? – is the intent for the cards to be given from us? Thanks!

  7. i too wondered about the submission forms, one per donor or one per card, is there a limit to the number of cards we send and we sign the cards, are the cards from us? thanks

  8. So happy to hear this is becoming an annual event 🙂 …..and that ANita, is heading up the Canadian “branch”.

  9. This made me smile as it reminded me of my late MIL who lived in a NH the last 8 years of her life due to illness. I recall my late hubby and I going each week, and when he was to ill I continued until her passing. I recall the need for cheer as not everyone has family who can visit and any cheer will bring happiness to those dear people. Thank you for doing this.

  10. Thank you so much for letting us know about this card drive…count me in! Thanks to you, Vera, Tina and Anita for hosting and to all the companies who have been so generous!

  11. THANKS so much for bringing this card drive to my attention. I am going to get some of my family members involved and I am hoping to mail a box full. 😀

  12. I am thrilled to have found this post, I will be sending cards for the first time to Caring Hearts! I do however send cards all year long to organizations that are in need, this is near and dear to my heart!

    thank you kindly *~*

  13. I just found your site (for the ink organizers and then read down and saw this). I have a large card group of 24-30 ladies, so I hope that we can get you a few cards from us. This group puts together 200+ gift bags for our local Nursing Home every Christmas. So many (here in FL) don’t have family nearby, so it’s such a great feeling to know that we can brighten the day/life of someone.

  14. What a wonderful act of kindness so i applaud u for that. I have seen first hand it how things are inside a NH so i will lov to contribute to put a big smile on couple residents. Tks ladies for caring specially for are older people who usually have been forgotten.

  15. This is a great idea and I hope to participate. One question…are the cards for the NH residents to send on to someone or are the cards for the residents to receive and keep?

  16. I had 2 questions, do we submit one form per card we send? Do we sign and add our location inside the card for the recipient ?

  17. This is so great; I am going to participate for the first time, and I am SO relieved that there is a Canadian branch…less costly for us! Thanks!

  18. Never mind my last message~! I see it in the above information. Duh! Helps if I read thoroughly instead of skim. I hope to participate. Thanks for the opportunity to use stash and bring cheer!

  19. Last year my mom and I both sent card to Vera’s drive. Ironically, this year my mom is in a nursing home, and because of her going in, I have been forced to move and am not nearby to her to be able to visit regularly. I will be submitting cards this year, and I was wondering how I might be able to submit my mom’s nursing home as one to receive some cards from your drive? There are so many people who have no family, or who have family out of state, like myself. I know this would help so many. Please let me know.

Also, I wanted to let you know that I had gotten my mom into card making during the last few years I was caring for her at home, and when she went into the NH, I made sure she had some of her basic supplies. She has taught several other residents to make cards, and they get together to do so whenever they are all well enough. It gives them something positive to do and helps them to feel useful and needed. It is such a blessing this hobby of ours!

    Thanks,
    Maureen

  20. What a great idea! I never participated in a card drive but really want.
I have one question about a message inside. How should it start?
    Like
    Dear who?
Sorry for probably stupid question, but I’ve never done this before and English is not my native language so I don’t now “American rules” of signing cards.

  21. This is absolutely fabulous!! What a great cause! I’ve posted the badge on my sidebar and I plan on getting some Christmas designs made up to send in too! 🙂 Thanks to all of the generous sponsors! Now off to hop!

  22. I thought about sending my cards for nursing home residents to Springfield, OH but have decided to take my cards to the 75 residents in my hometown where I live. In addition to each receiving a card I am including candies from our area specialty candy store in little gift bags for all to enjoy. I have already received approval to include these candies and have almost completed my cards. Each card is different from the others so all can share and compare. This project has forced me to try out the “clean and simple” approach to cardmaking. This personal challenge has helped me to stretch my imagination. I purchased a paper collection from Heartfelt Creations and added my own personal spin. Hope everyone enjoys this experience as I’m sure most of the nursing home residents will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

  23. I have a question?

I don’t have a printer so can I just write out the form?

Also is it okay to use stamps with the words Blessings, God Bless, A silent night verse?
When I sign my name do I also add my whole address or just Canada?

Thank you for you’re reply. I started making them today and I have 3 done so far. I think this is such a great cause and they are made with love.

    Linda

  24. Jennifer, I cannot tell you how wonderful I think your efforts are on behalf of the recipients. I follow your blog and participate in many of your online classes which, BTW, are always top-notch. I have no idea how you find the time to do the many things that you do in addition to your most important job as mother to two small children and just wanted to take a minute to tell you how much I enjoy participating in this challenge, it is my second year. I truly think I get more joy creating these cards than perhaps even the recipients. Thank you again for all you do!

  25. When I told my husband about your card drive- he lit up! What a wonderful cause. I made the cards, but he will write messages- he has just the right idea about what to say.
Ditto what Margaret said- many of us are touched by your creativity, boundless energy and enthusiasm and kind heart.

  26. Ok cards are off in the mail, had to do priority mail because I am sooooo behind. But the eldery is a special cause for me!!! I took care of my Grandmother for 19 years and then my Mother for about ten years. Both are gone now but I always remember how the eldery in those homes were often forgotten which was so sad after a long life. I hope my cards will cheer someone up!!!!
