Video + Ink Comparison: Pigment and Dye Inks

Hello! As promised, I am back with a comparison of several newer inks: Hero Arts Shadow Inks, My Favorite Things Dye Inks and Memento Luxe Pigment Inks.

Hero Arts Shadow Inks (which include Soft and Mid-Tone) have been out for awhile, but many new colors have been released lately. They are a must-have dye ink for all stampers. My Favorite Things Dye Inks are a bit newer and have some nice, more intense colors. Memento Luxe Pigment Inks are the newest of the bunch and offer amazing results that I am loving. (NOTE: I only included these newer inks due to lots of questions about them. Please know that I still lovelovelove Distress Inks for techniques – my favorite!)

Instead of typing out a comparison, I did a quick video:

Here is a color comparison. I put all the Hero Arts Shadow, My Favorite Things and Luxe Inks together to make it easy to compare:

(Note: A couple of the newest MFT inks are not included in this comparison as they came out after it was created.)

Many people will ask which my favorite is. Honestly – it is up to you. Hero Arts Shadow Inks work well for all stampers as a basic, no-fail ink. Memento Luxe Inks are pigment and therefore need a bit more care, but give fabulous, solid results and works with embossing and on colored cardstocks. The My Favorite Things Inks are great for getting the results you want immediately. I would recommend trying different ones and deciding which you like best. Me? I will use them all. But this is my job and I need as many tools as possible. πŸ™‚

People also have asked how the Memento Luxe Ink compares to the regular Memento. I like Luxe better for general stamping – especially of solid images.

By the way, I used my favorite Hero Arts background stamp on these ink swatches – the Leaf and Floral Background. I also used Neenah white cardstock for the tags, along with the Tim Holtz Tiny Tabs and Tags die. (This is an awesome die – cuts through many layers at once!) All these tags go on a ring together with all my other inks.

And a big thanks to my Kay for putting this together. She earned a little extra spending money for college… you all got an ink comparison… and I have my ink swatch ring! πŸ™‚

Please leave an questions you may have below and I will reply to them here. Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for this Jennifer and Kay! I have been eyeing up the Hero Arts inks as I like how they look on your cards. I mostly have Distress inks with a few odds and ends of other brands so this will be a great source of inspiration to help me pick a few colors to start building my ink stash. Happy summer to you!

  2. this is a great video!

clearsnap calls the pad for the colorbox dye a “skinned foam”, the skin is smooth so when you ink a stamp it doesn’t get a texture, like twill/fabric topped pads can give you

  3. Sounds like you and Kay worked out a win-win arrangement! πŸ™‚

Thanks for the video…I confess I giggled every time you inked up your fingers at the thought of Kristina cringing at getting her fingers all messy! πŸ™‚

  4. Hi Jennifer,,,,,what stamp set did you use for the round circle stamp that says Why Hello There?
Thanks for this comparison,,,,it’s very helpful πŸ™‚

  5. Great comparison! Thanks Jenifer. I am looking for a good gray ink. I haven’t fond one that is really a gray. Most stamp out in a blue or greenish hue. Not what I want. It looks like the HA Charcoal or Soft Granite might actually be an honest gray. Is that what you have found?

  6. Such lovely colors. I wish this was my job so I would have the excuse to have them all.
Thanks for the info, I always forget the difference between dye and pigment when I’m in the store staring at all the pretty colors. I’m a messy stamper, so dye usually works a bit better for me.

  7. Thanks for the boatload of work Jennifer and Kay. Great job! I’m bookmarking this for future reference. Much appreciated, as it will save us some money and having to do our own trial and error comparisons.

  8. Thank you so much for this informative video Jennifer. I have a question: My Hero Arts ink stains the stamp. I wipe it with a baby wipe and dry it but when I stamp using another color, the stamped image has a touch of older ink color. thanks

  9. After seeing you use these inks recently, I added several new pads both from My Favorite Things and then the wonderful new Memento Luxe Inks and I feel exactly as you do about them.

I’m also a big fan of Distress Ink and own every color, along with all the Hero Arts Shadow and Mid-Tones (except the Christmas colors) due out soon.

I first added my favorite colors from MFT, and LOVE the Vibrant shades I picked and especially love that they have refills!! I also just bought (last week) some of the wonderful new Luxe Pigment inks, which I love because you an also emboss with them. The colors are all gorgeous and I will likely add more to my collection.

Thanks for much for a great video! I’d hire Kay too, if I could to make me one of those amazing rings. They are so helpful, but for me to find the time to make one, will take forever!

  10. Thanks for the ink comparisons! I just discovered that some of my Colorbox pigment petal points are dry… I am considering picking up a couple of Memento Luxe if a local retailer can get them in in the fall. πŸ™‚

  11. Great ink comparison. I love how you explain the types and what they are best used for. Love your ink swatch ring – another idea for my to do list …. thanks πŸ™‚

I love all of your storage ideas – that should be my career in life, as I love to be organized. I am currently working on the stamp storage …. love, love, love it. Plus I was able to get a couple of the fridge binz on sale, as Storage Solutions offered a 20% off coupon on one item.

  12. Oh!!! One of the best posts ever! Thank you so much for the much awaited and useful info! =D You’re the best!

  13. This is most excellent info Jennifer. I’m just working on a project, thinking I want to do a watercolor effect, with distress ink, on water color paper, thinking I need to stamp images with archival ink vs memento–or can I use clear embossing ink? Going to go test on some scrap watercolor paper. I took Tim’s Chemistry class, it was awesome by the way. Thanks for all the wonderful info and a huge thanks to Kay as well for making all the color swatches for us. Have to try some of those new inks out there.

  14. Thank you Jennifer, you’ve explained it beautifully! I finally understand why one would want to use pigment over dyes on colored cardstock!!! Yay πŸ™‚ Gonna go buy some of that yummy ink right now!

  15. Fantastic job Jennifer and Kay! Great to see all the colours side by side. I only have some Distress Inks, Ranger Archival and HA ink pads. I love them all! I may try the Luxe inks now! Thanks!

  16. Thanks Jennifer for an awesome comparison post. Well done to Kay, she has done an excellent job! It was actually a video of Kay’s that led me to your blog a few years ago when I first became interested in stamping! Great girl. I feel that I need to refresh my ink pad stash after this post!

  17. Jennifer (and Kay), you always come thru with fantastic comparisons. This is one that was sorely needed as there are so many new inks out there now. Thanks so much for this ! Kay, you did a beautiful job. Blessings to both of you !

  18. I forgot to ask: What is your favorite brown other than the distress ink browns? I am looking for something a little bit different than those colors. THanks!

  19. Thank you so much for that Jennifer, I love the swatches idea, I have done that with my distress inks and inktense pencils. Once I spend all my money on the other inks i will do the same. Your input much appreciated.

  20. An awesome comparison and color chart. Thanks Jennifer and Kay. Spending money for college is always a good thing. My son will be a college freshmen this year and I’ve been giving him odd jobs for spending money too.

  21. So sweet of Kay to do that for you! Thanks for the video and that huge comparison chart – I appreciate the time it took for you to do this post!

  22. Thank you Jennifer for this educational video. I have often wondered what the difference between dye and pigment inks was. You did this in a great way to help me and others understand. Thank you also for the colour-comparisons of the inks – very handy. Thanks also for enabling me to make further purchases πŸ™‚

  23. Jennifer,
Thank you so much for the explanation. I have asked several people to explain the difference between dye inks and pigment inks and NO ONE has ever been able to explain it the way you just did. Now I don’t feel like an idiot when Im buying ink. The video was so wonderful and I love the color comparisons!!!! You Rock!!!

  24. P.S. I am a die hard Distress Ink person. It’s pretty much all I use because I could never figure out all the different types of ink and what they were for. Thank you again for the explanation.

  25. great video! i’ve been eyeing the ‘mft’ inks for a while, i even asked ‘sss’ if they would be stocking them. i guess i can safely order all of the colours now, as the postage to the uk is $45 whether i order one or all 23!

have you worked with the stamping up inks? as i recently got some and found that when i stamp with rubber stamps i have to make sure i wipe the edge of the stamp before stamping or it transfers!?! they are very juicy as some have leaked, any ideas? am i doing something wrong?

  26. Dear Jennifer,
thank you so much for the great video comparison, it was absolutely clarifying for “newbies” on scrapping like me… πŸ™‚ I would be really grateful to see more explaining videos on the most common used products for cards or scrapping. For example, I have just bought my first(!) embossing powder and two ink pads (I didn’t know which one to choose), a watermark one and a pigment one. I don’t really know which one is the best for embossing and what is the difference between them. I, also, have a “silly” question but others may have it too so here it is…..I haven’t yet bought a heat gun, can I use a hairdryer to emboss until I buy my heat gun or it won’t do the embossing at all? Thank you again for your great video!

  27. Thank you and Kay for all the work! I’m sure that without your videos (and other artist’s videos too, I have to be honest) I would have supplies I do not want or need and others I wouldn’t know how to use, to say the least… Now for the inks, I have a few Memento dye inks, however I’m not totally happy with them because with some colors the stamping results too splashy… the new Memento Lux, apparently, look a lot like Versa Magic, which I absolutely love, so I guess I’m going to give it a try πŸ™‚

  28. Thank you so much for a great video! I am in love with the shadow inks I’ve collected so far (in addition to my distress inks of course), and learned a lot from this easy-to-understand discussion and comparison.

  29. Hi Jennifer, this was a very helpful video for me.. Was so glad to see you like Hero Arts Inks since I just ordered about 20 of them and would have been bummed to find I made a horrible mistake πŸ™‚ I haven’t been able to use them like I would like yet.. Also have a couple of MFT’s inks too. My question is.. for white ink (and I am SURE you have answered this before) I assume it should be pigment? Since that gives the BEST coverage. Is that accurate? Which one do you prefer. I would really like to find a SOLID wonderful white ink.

  30. OMG! I can imagine hours spending to prepare tags for his post, filming and editing video, taking photos. And all this for us to know more about these inks! Thank you is not enough to express appreciation for the work you’ve done!!!
I have pigment inks of another brands but now definitely wanna try some luxe. They looks so juicy!
Thank you and Kay for your awesome job!
