Video + Ink Comparison: Pigment and Dye Inks

Hello! As promised, I am back with a comparison of several newer inks: Hero Arts Shadow Inks, My Favorite Things Dye Inks and Memento Luxe Pigment Inks.

Hero Arts Shadow Inks (which include Soft and Mid-Tone) have been out for awhile, but many new colors have been released lately. They are a must-have dye ink for all stampers. My Favorite Things Dye Inks are a bit newer and have some nice, more intense colors. Memento Luxe Pigment Inks are the newest of the bunch and offer amazing results that I am loving. (NOTE: I only included these newer inks due to lots of questions about them. Please know that I still lovelovelove Distress Inks for techniques – my favorite!)

Instead of typing out a comparison, I did a quick video:

Here is a color comparison. I put all the Hero Arts Shadow, My Favorite Things and Luxe Inks together to make it easy to compare:

(Note: A couple of the newest MFT inks are not included in this comparison as they came out after it was created.)

Many people will ask which my favorite is. Honestly – it is up to you. Hero Arts Shadow Inks work well for all stampers as a basic, no-fail ink. Memento Luxe Inks are pigment and therefore need a bit more care, but give fabulous, solid results and works with embossing and on colored cardstocks. The My Favorite Things Inks are great for getting the results you want immediately. I would recommend trying different ones and deciding which you like best. Me? I will use them all. But this is my job and I need as many tools as possible. 🙂

People also have asked how the Memento Luxe Ink compares to the regular Memento. I like Luxe better for general stamping – especially of solid images.

By the way, I used my favorite Hero Arts background stamp on these ink swatches – the Leaf and Floral Background. I also used Neenah white cardstock for the tags, along with the Tim Holtz Tiny Tabs and Tags die. (This is an awesome die – cuts through many layers at once!) All these tags go on a ring together with all my other inks.

And a big thanks to my Kay for putting this together. She earned a little extra spending money for college… you all got an ink comparison… and I have my ink swatch ring! 🙂

Please leave an questions you may have below and I will reply to them here. Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for the great job comparing and explaining the ink qualities. Will have to try the Memento Luxe.

  2. Simply amazing what you do for all of us who aspire to be great artists such as yourself. Thank you so much for taking the time to stamp, label, and record your inking results! I don’t know how you find the time……Thank you thank you thank you!

  3. Thanks for doing this comparison. There are so many beautiful inks…I’m excited to try the Memento Luxe….but I don’t know if I need another ink to collect! =)

  4. Wonderful tutorial. A wealth of information. I love wet embossing so I will have to try those Luxe inks.

  5. Thank you so much for showing what the different ink colors look like! That was very helpful & now I have a list of colors I “need” to get! 🙂

  6. Thank you very much for this video. I do have a question the main ink pads that I use are Color Box and I am finding that they bleed on the paper once the image is stamped. I also find that I get bubbles on my stamps after I ink them up. What can I do to fix these problems?? Thanks for your help!

  7. Thanks for the great video! I was just wondering about the Memento Luxe inks … it’s always great to see things in action. Could you tell me how you find it compared to other pigment inks?

    1. i normally don’t love pigment inks due to the mess. but these are juicer and give such a good impression that i love them. and they seem to dry faster, too.

  8. I appreciate knowing the difference between these inks, Jennifer. I’ve often wondered… 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to explain and to do a video. Seeing the inks in action made it super clear for me.

    Thanks again!

  9. Great video, loved seeing the comparisons actually being stamped. I have been perusing the Luxe variety for a few weeks – I feel the purchase is now “sealed”! Your ink swatch looks so pretty too – well done, Kay! Thank you both 🙂

  10. I am purchasing a few more Hero Arts shadow inks because I really like them. (You got me hooked on them.) I had a color chart but it doesn’t include the new colors. I can’t find a chart on the Hero Arts website. Can you include a link to the chart in one of your blogs?

  11. Great post Jennifer. Thanks Kay for making this post possible! It was interesting to see how much brighter/vibrant the Luxe inks were. Thanks again.

  12. Really thank you for the post. I always want to see how different ink colour from different companies how they compare. If only there’s a comparison between distress ink/hero arts/paper trey/memento ink that would be perfect (at least in my world…) 🙂

  13. I have glossy and texture paper that I need to emboss or just stamp on. It needs to dry so it won’t smear too. I have researched Versa Magic and Memento Luxe as my choices. Which one would works better for embossing on textured glossy paper? Thank you for your help.

  14. It’s remarkable to go to see this site and reading the views of all mates regarding this article, while I am also zealous of getting
    knowledge.

  15. I love this comparison; I refer to it often to refresh my memory. I recently heard the Momento Luxe inks are great for blending. Have you tried them for that purpose?

  17. Good post. I learn something new and challenging on blogs I stumbleupon everyday.
It will always be interesting to read articles from other authors and practice a little something from other sites.

  18. Hello Jennifer!
So, I was in need of a crisp, back ink for stamping greetings. I remembered that you mentioned one that you particularly liked for this, but do you suppose I could find the reference I was looking for? LOL! What I ended up purchasing was this: TSUKINEKO MEMENTO LARGE RUBBER STAMP INK PAD FAST DRYING FADE RESISTANT DYE In your opinion, will this give me a crisp, dark impression? Along the same lines is a white ink i am in need of. Having already bought a white chalk ink, I soon discovered that this wasn’t suitable for techniques like white stamping on black paper and then coloring with bright pencils. So I got this one instead: VERSACRAFT FULL SIZE INK PAD – TSUKINEKO in white. I am hoping for good results with stamping on dark cardstock, however I did want to ask your opinion. Thanks so much for everything you give back to the crafting community, and the endless inspiration you have given me! God Bless you, Jennifer!
    From,
    Lisa

  19. Thank you for the comparison. I am so confused as to the inks to use. I love your projects and I have just started with Altenew products. Which is better to use for beginner for ink? Where can I find difference between inks and which to buy. I don’t have personal website.

  20. I would like that considers change the language web page too to spanish. I’m live in Puerto Rico and i make a scrapbook about last 15 years. In the webs its no much more to spanish scrapbook videos techniques. Sorry for my english.

  21. Hi Jennifer. Which ink pads are the best ones to buy if you want to use the technique where you put the ink down on a craft mat and then use in to water color. Thank you.

  22. Aw, this was an incredibly nice post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to produce
    a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a
whole lot and don’t seem to get anything done.

  23. I just recently discovered your blog and videos and I am so happy. I have been crafting all my life but am now focusing on cards. My cards have had the feel of ordinary and predictable but then I discovered your youtube videos and ultimately your website. You are a wonderful teacher and have inspiring ideas! So many possibilities and so little time! Admittedly I am on input overload and have a challenge filtering what new tools and materials to add to my resources. I could go on and on but, just know you have a new subscriber for life. To balance video watching with other things higher on my ‘to-do’ list I have decided to watch while putting in time on the elliptical trainer. I am fascinated now how the time flies! No more clock watching so see if my ‘time is up’. AND, I am limiting my watching to only when using the elliptical so there is great incentive to do my workouts more frequently! Thank you for all you do!

  24. Thankyou Jennifer I came onto your site for storage and watched this…wow.have learnt so much …lunch now then you stamp & die storage video
